The 2013 opening weekend at the Lodge and Spa at Brush Creek Ranch is only a few short weeks away! It's a truly special time on the ranch when the flora and fauna begin to reawaken and bloom. We have about 55 seasonal staff members beginning to arrive next week, and we're preparing to open the doors on what will be our most exciting season yet.
April has been a fun and busy month for us. I just returned from Chicago with some of my team where we pulled a reverse "City Slickers" and took a piece of the ranch to the big city for a unique corporate meeting planning event. We set up an archery course so attendees could test their aim and get a taste of one of the many activities and adventures we offer on the ranch. It was a huge hit and we received tremendous feedback about our adventure meeting packages for corporate groups.

I gave up on PRICELINE for March in Key West, went with the Carribean Guesthouse instead. It s around 129 and right in the heat of downtown, with good reviews. A lot of 1* - 2.5* inns in Key West are really far from downtown and parking is supposedly a nightmare. I m a big priceline fan but I think in KW PRICELINE is at it s best either off-season or to shave a few % off a 300 4*. Just my opinion though.

I bid gradually up to the 126. I was bidding 2 nights for quite a while, but decided to experiment with just one night and hit at 126. The answer for Jacques Lowe, whose images helped create the legend of John F Kennedy , was to store them in JP Morgan's seemingly impregnable vault in Tower 5 of New York's World Trade Center. But then 9/11 came, and his life's work went with it.
After the terror attack, Jacques Lowe's daughter, Thomasina, campaigned to try and retrieve her father's archive from the twin tower's rubble before they were razed. Amazingly, the safe in which they were stored was found intact, but the contents – over 40,000 negatives – were reduced to ash. All was not completely lost though, as 1,500 of Lowe's contact sheets were located elsewhere in New York. From these, selected images were painstakingly restored for an exhibition at the Newseum in Washington DC. A collection of prints from the original negatives were also made by the photographer himself, prior to his death four months before 9/11. An exhibition at Proud Chelsea in London is now showcasing these rarities.

Late last night we flew into Las Vegas, Nevada to begin our self-guided tour of several national parks in the southwestern part of the U.S.  Jeff had made a one-night reservation for us at the Four Seasons Hotel because it was advertised as a quiet, no-casino, no glitz, centrally located hotel.  It was actually located on the top five floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel which had lots of glitz, twenty-two restaurants, many shops, and a 135,000 square foot casino.
The lobby of the Four Seasons was quiet, peaceful, and tastefully decorated.  This morning, we went downstairs to explore Mandalay Bay.  It was crowded with lots of people and loud music was everywhere.  We discovered that the casino was empty at 8:00 o clock in the morning.  We had breakfast at Raffles and took a walk outside.
Afterwards, we checked out and retrieved our rental car and drove down the famous Strip to see the other hotels.  Las Vegas is an amazing city with an incredible number of huge hotels and gambling establishments.

I was in Washington, DC, with my family and a contingent of about 200 students and supporters of the State of Michigan "We The People" champions from East Grand Rapids high school on this epic evening in American history. We were in a celebratory mood as we just found out that the team made the Top Ten finals slated for Monday morning in one of the historic hearing rooms in Capitol Hill. A goal that has been in the minds of the team members since September when they embarked on this journey.
Elena and I were at Clyde's in Georgetown with close friends and fellow "We The People" parents, Frank and Susan Merlotti and Dick and Deb VanderZyden, when the news of Osama Bin Laden's death captured the emotions of many Americans glued to the tube and cell phones upon receiving word of his demise.
