KEY LARGO, Florida Keys - Several Key Largo hotels are offering reduced-rate accommodations for visitors who want to join round-the-clock efforts to rehabilitate a remaining surviving pilot whale convalescing at the Florida Keys-based Marine Mammal Conservancy.
A second 600-pound, nine-foot-long female calf, that also stranded May 5 off the lower Florida Keys, recovered and has been successfully transported from the Marine Mammal Conservancy (MMC) in Key Largo to SeaWorld Orlando.
When the traveler completes at least one four-hour shift, MMC representatives will award the traveler a voucher. The voucher is good for the traveler's stay for up to five days Sunday night through new orleans discount hotels Thursday night, and must be presented to the hotel in order to receive the special new orleans discount hotels rate.
The reduced-rate program is focused on weekdays, because that is when the need for manpower is greatest. Visitors arriving in Key Largo for the volunteer effort are encouraged to sign up for multiple shifts.
As many as 20 volunteers are needed per four-hour shift to assist with a wide range of activities at MMC, located at mile marker 102.1 bayside. Volunteers help with everything from in-water support (must be 18 or older) to land-based tasks such as answering new orleans discount hotels phones. Shore duties can be performed new orleans discount hotels by teens under 18.
Holiday blackout dates for the special rate include Sunday, July 3, and Sunday, Sept. 3. Advance reservations new orleans discount hotels are required, and the lodging property must be advised that guests are planning to volunteer.
Volunteers must not visit other marine mammal facilities for at least 72 hours — and to follow other protocols posted at the Marine Mammal Conservancy — to reduce potential for disease transmission. Humans can carry viruses on their skin, clothes and belongings, and possibly transmit them to other marine mammals. People with compromised immune systems, open wounds and/or are pregnant are advised not to participate in the water with the whales, but may assist with land-based activities.
