All around an incredible day on the water seeing some amazing stuff that we don’t really get to see
Today was a day at port in the capitol city of Juneau! We arrive in the morning and first activity of the day was whale watching! We've been able to see one or two humpback whales off in the distance already on this trip but this was going to be a specific trip to see the whales.
At 9:30am we all loaded up into a bus and were shipped off to Auke Bay where we were to meet our guides. A 25 minute ride got us there just in time. We had two boats reserved. Each of which held 10 people. It was great to be able to have our own private boats and not be on some boat with 30 other people who you don't know.
My boat was definitely the best. Our two captains were pretty cheap first class airline tickets awesome. Captain Jack was an older gentleman that spent many (25-ish I think) years in the Coast Guard and came to live in Juneau after retiring. He is known throughout the Coast Guard and Alaska for being the only person who can tell how far away from shore he is just by sound. In the dark/fog he can blow the ships horn and calculate cheap first class airline tickets by the echoes how far away they are from shore. Is that not pretty awesome?! And in general cheap first class airline tickets just a really nice and very knowledgable man.
Our second captain was a younger cheap first class airline tickets guy in his mid thirties named Alan. Alan was from Ireland originally, cheap first class airline tickets lived in Malaysia and Singapore for several years guiding dives and doing underwater videography, moved to Alaska 9 years ago and guides whale watching and bear watching as well as wildlife photography. He showed us a series of pictures of an Orca breaching the water while attacking a Sea Lion. They were absolutely incredible. In general, he was just a cool guy and certainly knew his stuff. I learned cheap first class airline tickets quite a few new things about whales and the area in general.
cheap first class airline tickets Fun facts: Admiralty cheap first class airline tickets Island has 1 bear per 1.4-1.8 square mile. Estimates are about 2,000 to 3,000 bears on this island; Male Orcas live to be about 40-50 years old, females up to 70 years old; Orcas don't start having babies until they are roughly 15 years old and will stay with their mothers up until that time; Humpback whales will travel to and from Alaska to Hawaii each year. After leaving Alaska they won't eat until they return; The first humpback from this bay arrived in Hawaii on August 25th, about a month earlier than usual.
We saw a pod of Orcas right in the harbor as soon as we embarked from the dock. Alan told us that they see Orcas about 1 in every 30 to 40 trips! There were several of them and we sat and watched them for 45 minutes or so. It was absolutely incredible. Orcas are some of the coolest animals. Also, these were Transient Orcas. There are three different types of orcas: Transient, Resident, and Offshore. The differences between them are simply cheap first class airline tickets what they eat and/or where they are located. Transient Orcas eat other mammals, Resident Orcas live in the same place their whole lives and eat fish, and Offshore Orcas live way off-shore and eat sharks cheap first class airline tickets and fish. We really got a treat to be able to see these incredible cheap first class airline tickets animals God created!
Not only did we see the orcas but saw Bald Eagles, Humpback Whales, and Sea Lions. The Humpbacks were pretty cool, too, when they would dive and their tails would swing up into the air. Unfortunately, I didn't get any good pictures of the tails. Sea Lions were pretty abundant and it was amazing how big they are! Up to 1,700 lbs for the big males! These were Steller Sea Lions, named after Dr. Steller. I believe they are the biggest Sea Lions.
All around an incredible day on the water seeing some amazing stuff that we don't really cheap first class airline tickets get to see in Texas. It was about 48 degrees and sprinkling so it made for a pretty cold 3.5 hours on the boat but it was definitely cheap first class airline tickets worth the cold. Here are some pictures from our excursion.
