During my morning read of the USA Travel section, an article on Celebrity changing its loyalty program startled me.  I hadn’t read any warnings or rumors.  So didn’t think I would have to worry about any immediate changes.  Also, the Captain s Club seemed to be pretty fair.  But as Royal Caribbean made changes in 2011 to their program (as did Carnival and Norwegian over the years), I guess Celebrity had to as well.  Not that it’s a copycat business, but when the highest level was somewhat easy to attain Celebrity felt it had to update it.  And as the website “now gives you two new tiers to strive for”.  On this change, I am unhappy, which is a different tune than my recent post on Infinity .
First, it makes it harder to cruise lower categories for higher status .  Before, a cruise in an inside cabin gave you one credit.  If you took 5 cruises, you would earn the next tier at Select.  Now, if you took a 7-night cruise in an Inside/Outside cruise, you would earn 14 points.  If you cruised 5 times in an Inside or Outside, you would earn 14 points x 5 cruises = 70 points.  You would still be the low tier Classic and would have to take 6 more cruises in the Inside/Outside cabin.
Second, the sweet spot of 12+-night cruise is no longer sweet .  As I mentioned in my Infinity post, I was able to capitalize on a double credits promotion using the 12-night itinerary.  Under the old system, a Concierge Class or above room on the longer itinerary awarded you with 3 credits.  Though, if the cruise were 11 nights, you would only earn 2 credits.  So you could quickly earn Elite, then the highest status, by sailing 3 cruises 12 nights or longer (in a Concierge Class or better) and any cruise afterwards (3 cruises x 3 credits central and south america cheap airplane tickets = 9: 3 credits =  1 credit for 12-nights or more, 1 credit for Concierge or better, and 1 credit for completed cruise.  Regardless of the next cruise length or cabin, you would have earn one credit and earned Elite, which would then total 10 credits).

One thing I can possibly see is consolidating the Crown Anchor and Captain’s Club.  Since both are on a points system and similar earning styles (1 Crown Anchor point per night and extra point for Suite Class and above), it might be the direction Royal Caribbean International (the parent company) is thinking.  This could slow Captain Club members from going to Carnival or Norwegian or Crown Anchor moving to other upscale brands, if they value Elite Status.
Overall, I am disappointed in the change.  By the end of this year, I would need one more Celebrity Cruise to attain Elite.  Now, I need another cruise but at a minimum an Aqua or Concierge Class room for 7 nights to qualify.

Mr. Kachadourian also argues that government should favor Christianity and host Christian displays, like manger scenes, because �the vast majority of the populace (sic) in this nation are Christians.� That is exactly why the First Amendment was added to our Constitution.
Religio-political majorities have traditionally thought that government should endorse, if not enforce, the majority religion, be it a sect of Christianity, Islam or any other. Conflict over such official religions is one major reason why warfare has been such a constant through human history. Our Founding Fathers wrote the First Amendment out of wisdom learned from experience with Europe�s cheap one way car rental wars between Catholics and Protestants.
Despite the First Amendment, Christians in public office have often given in to the temptation to use their secular, government authority for religious purposes. Opponents of gay rights in Africa often suggest that homosexuality is “un-African”. The Reverend Kapya Kaoma is a short, dapper man of unfailing politeness, excusing himself apologetically every time he rises from our table at a Cape Town hotel. Kaoma wrote a report in 2012 called “Colonizing African values: How the US Christian Right is transforming sexual politics in Africa”, which is what introduced Williams to the subject of his documentary. Kaoma, who is originally Zambian, had observed with concern the extension and intensification of anti-gay legislation in Africa over the past decade. From 2006, when Zimbabwe expanded its sodomy laws, Uganda, thrifty car rental canada Malawi, Nigeria and the DRC have all either mooted or implemented more extreme homophobic laws. Kaoma went undercover for months of research to try to figure out what was going on.
“There were Christian missionaries in Africa since the nineteenth century,” Kaoma explains between bites of breakfast. “It was in the 70s and 80s that a new wave of Christianity starting arriving that was charismatic, evangelical. In the past, we used to see the kind of missionary who would come and stay for a long time and become part of a community. Now… you have 10 minutes? You can come to Africa.”
Uganda was particularly targeted after the fall of dictator Idi Amin in 1979. And so their attention has shifted to other parts of the world, beyond US borders, where they believe they can still make an impact. They’re focusing on Africa and the Caribbean. Later I mention that Rebecca Kadaga, the speaker of the Ugandan parliament and public champion of Uganda’s kill-the-gays bill, has just been elected chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, a role she was nominated to, incidentally, by South Africa. Williams and Kaoma hadn’t heard the news, as they have been touring Malawi, and both are shocked.
In his documentary, there is footage of US far-right preacher Scott Lively addressing an Ugandan audience, which was filmed by Kaoma. Writing on a flip chart, Lively instructs his audience that gays are pederasts, that gays were responsible for Nazi Germany, that gays have taken over the UN and that gays are coming to Uganda to “recruit your children”. But, Lively says, “Uganda can be the first country to stop them” if they implement “public policy that discourages homosexuality”.
On that same visit to Uganda, Lively was given permission to address the Ugandan parliament for five hours. It was after this that MP David Bahati introduced the kill-the-gays bill in October 2009. Bahati claims that after the bill was introduced, donations to Uganda from Western churches tripled. In 2010, Uganda’s Rolling Stone newspaper thrifty car rental canada published the names, addresses and photos of “Uganda’s Top Homos” with an exhortation thrifty car rental canada to “Hang them”. thrifty car rental canada Less than six months later, Ugandan gay activist David Kato was murdered in his home.
Williams asks the young American missionaries of IHOP on camera what they think about the anti-gay bill, and they shrug it off, saying they haven’t read it. But Scott Lively described it as “an encouraging step in the right direction”, and Lou Engle is shown on film calling for prayers thrifty car rental canada of strength for the Ugandan government and their “statement of righteousness”.
Barack Obama was among the world leaders to condemn the anti-gay bill. In the documentary, Ugandan preacher Martin Ssempa, who was trained by evangelicals in the US, bitterly denounces Obama for “coming to Africa and telling us what to do”. It is, Ssempa says, “hypocrisy of the highest order”. But the fact that Ssempa’s own anti-gay thrifty car rental canada rhetoric has been adopted straight from the States too doesn’t seem to worry him.

Williams knows that his documentary runs the risk of being interpreted as anti-Christian, and he’s at pains to state that a lot of American religious groups do “an incredible amount of good work” in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa. Williams’ own family ran a mega-church when he was growing up.
“I spent three years with fundamentalists [while making the documentary],” Williams says. “They weren’t these evil bogeymen. I had a lot of fun, I really liked some of them.” Kaoma, meanwhile, has retained his religious faith. “We don’t have to demonise [evangelicals],” he says. “They really believe in what they are doing. Christianity is all about convictions… They can have all the views they want but what I denounce is that they want to use that as the basis for [government] policy. We condemn Islamic fundamentalists, but if we do that how are we different?”

We asked her spokesperson and friend, James B. Rose, president of the American Christian History Institute to give us some insight into Mary and why her book is important.
Quickened by the research and remarkable testimony of Verna M. Hall, American Christian Historian, Mary-Elaine Swanson (nee Adams) devoted her spiritual and intellectual gifts for the last fifty years to documenting the Christian history and character of the men and women God used to advance individual liberty and self-government in America.
