During my morning read of the USA Travel section, an article on Celebrity changing its loyalty program startled me. I hadn’t read any warnings or rumors. So didn’t think I would have to worry about any immediate changes. Also, the Captain s Club seemed to be pretty fair. But as Royal Caribbean made changes in 2011 to their program (as did Carnival and Norwegian over the years), I guess Celebrity had to as well. Not that it’s a copycat business, but when the highest level was somewhat easy to attain Celebrity felt it had to update it. And as the website “now gives you two new tiers to strive for”. On this change, I am unhappy, which is a different tune than my recent post on Infinity .
First, it makes it harder to cruise lower categories for higher status . Before, a cruise in an inside cabin gave you one credit. If you took 5 cruises, you would earn the next tier at Select. Now, if you took a 7-night cruise in an Inside/Outside cruise, you would earn 14 points. If you cruised 5 times in an Inside or Outside, you would earn 14 points x 5 cruises = 70 points. You would still be the low tier Classic and would have to take 6 more cruises in the Inside/Outside cabin.
Second, the sweet spot of 12+-night cruise is no longer sweet . As I mentioned in my Infinity post, I was able to capitalize on a double credits promotion using the 12-night itinerary. Under the old system, a Concierge Class or above room on the longer itinerary awarded you with 3 credits. Though, if the cruise were 11 nights, you would only earn 2 credits. So you could quickly earn Elite, then the highest status, by sailing 3 cruises 12 nights or longer (in a Concierge Class or better) and any cruise afterwards (3 cruises x 3 credits central and south america cheap airplane tickets = 9: 3 credits = 1 credit for 12-nights or more, 1 credit for Concierge or better, and 1 credit for completed cruise. Regardless of the next cruise length or cabin, you would have earn one credit and earned Elite, which would then total 10 credits).
Under the new system, 12 nights in a Concierge Class or better cabin yields 60 points (12 nights x 5 points). If you want to strive for Elite, you have to sail 5 12-night cruises in a Concierge Class or better cabin (5 cruises x 12 nights x 5 points central and south america cheap airplane tickets = 300). If you preferred longer cruises, you would reach Elite one cruise longer central and south america cheap airplane tickets under the new system and you would have to book at least Concierge Class or better (5 cruises under new compared to 4 as shown in previous paragraph.)
Lastly, the new tier benefits don’t seem worth the effort. The first thing that caught my eye, Elite, Elite+, and Zenith are all Diamond on Royal Caribbean. central and south america cheap airplane tickets So if you were the type of cruisers who sailed both, you may be stuck at Diamond and Elite for a lifetime.
Those that had 100 cruise credits , which could have happened at over 33 long cruises to 50 cruises factoring the bonus credit for a Concierge/Aqua Class room or above. If you were on a 100 week long cruises in an Inside or Outside, I think you deserve more than Zenith. I feel cramped in a Veranda room sometimes. All kidding aside, you really increased central and south america cheap airplane tickets your value when under the new system you would earn 7 nights x 2 points x 100 cruises and you now qualify for Elite+ and still have 100 more similar cruises central and south america cheap airplane tickets to go to reach Zenith . So, if you have 100 cruise credits, congrats on making Zenith and enjoy that free cruise (see benefits of the 7 night Caribbean/Bermuda cruise)
This could be a low cost way of getting people to strive for those higher elite levels. Although, you may dilute the lower elite status (like Elite and Elite+) by allowing lesser tenured guests to earn their status sooner.
One thing I can possibly see is consolidating the Crown Anchor and Captain’s Club. Since both are on a points system and similar earning styles (1 Crown Anchor point per night and extra point for Suite Class and above), it might be the direction Royal Caribbean International (the parent company) is thinking. This could slow Captain Club members from going to Carnival or Norwegian or Crown Anchor moving to other upscale brands, if they value Elite Status.
Overall, I am disappointed in the change. By the end of this year, I would need one more Celebrity Cruise to attain Elite. Now, I need another cruise but at a minimum an Aqua or Concierge Class room for 7 nights to qualify.

I got interested in Celebrity, because of Royal so it would make sense to combine them. Azamara, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean all use similar points systems. So it really seems like an easy process to combine them.
