The announcement that in 2014 Royal Caribbean International is going to spice up its Transatlantic crossings, east and west, comes with a reminder. The European fleet will soon be sailing back to North America for the winter, leaving homeports like Venice , Barcelona , Southampton and Stockholm for new ones like New York , New Orleans , Miami and Port Canaveral .
My favourite Transatlantic cruises are the east-bound ones that rush across, then slow down in Europe.  I have no desire to visit ports in the Caribbean before crossing…I can do that in February when I need a break from winter. I also want a cruise that doesn't offer much more than a few European ports unless they're unique or the ship is the Queen Mary 2 .
