Need some pixies please... In the middle of July, my black lab was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). It came as a total shock - he had a limp that I assumed was just a strain/sprain or at the very worst, a slight fracture. Never in a million years did I guess cancer, and I never guessed that bone cancer is as aggressive and debilitating as it is. The cancer had already spread into his lungs so amputation and chemotherapy wouldn't be very effective. We opted for pain management and spoiling him as much as possible. The vet said it would most likely be only one to three months before he'd need to be put to sleep, but to prepare myself for closer to one month.
Fortunately we exceeded that prognosis. He'd been doing very well, other than his limp, but the past few days he's definitely taken a turn for the worse. I was hoping that he would have a few more good weeks left, but he's really having a hard time with the pain. He's on very strong pain medication and it isn't helping him as much as I'd expect. I would have expected him to be passed out most of the time but it barely affects him.
It's only going to be a very short while before I have to have him put to sleep now. Even as early as Tuesday, depending on how the rest of the weekend goes. He's resting comfortably now, and still has his normal huge appetite, but in general he's in a lot of pain.
