The lion's head is reported to be approximately 50cm high and weigh 15kg. Initial estimates date it to Roman times. The statue has been taken to the University of Calabria for further analysis that will enable archaeologists to date it more accurately. No information has been released on what the sculpture may have been used for, although a lion head is a typical symbol of the Roman Empire. As king of the animal kingdom, lions were associated strength and leadership, and Ancient Roman emperors adopted lion head statues to symbolise their authority.
