It may be December here in Myrtle Beach, but thanks to our mild weather, we were still able to get out and about this weekend without catching a chill. What did we do? Headed south to Georgetown, S.C. , to check out Black River Outdoors Center's popular kayak tours. Admittedly, business is a little quieter for them this time of year, but we were more than happy to have a guide all to ourselves. Visitors to our shores have been raving about the area's kayak tours ( and our many other water sports ) for some time now, and now we know why. The family-owned business offers two-, four-, and six-hour american tours international tours of Cypress/Tupelo Swamp, Huntington Beach State Park Salt Marsh, Jericho Creek, Sandy Island and more. They even offer guided kayak fishing trips for the super adventurous. We set out around 2 p.m. on a 6-hour trip through Winyah Bay to see the wreck of the U.S.S. Harvest Moon, the only Union flagship to be sunk during the Civil War. Our guide, Paul, was a wealth of Civil War-era historical information, including detailed accounts of how the war impacted the Low Country. Black River Outdoors provided all the necessary american tours international gear, including a paddling jacket and spray skirt, to keep us warm and dry on the lengthy paddle, and allowed us to pack our own snacks for later in the day. We saw a number of beautiful birds (easily identified by our guide) along the paddle, and once we reached the site of the U.S.S Harvest Moon, even saw a group of dolphins! The fantastic combination of the scenic Winyah Bay, interesting wildlife, and local history made the kayak trip one we would definitely recommend.
