So after a bit of shopping, not that we bought much apart from a pair of funny sunglasses with palm
I am a bit late with my review of Pago Pago an Samoa. I ran out of Internet time so I decided to wait a few days before renewing. The Internet on this ship is slower than ever I have experienced in the past. I have worked my way through £400 of usage already, mainly trying to upload my photos for the blog.
I first called there on a cruise in 1981.There was little there but shanty towns and a hotel called united kingdom postal codes the Rainmaker. The hotel had been damaged by a cyclone around that time as was damage in places. Nobody wore shoes on their feet! It was just a rugged rain forest island with little to do.
So on leaving the ship we went walkabouts. Pago Pago is a large deep harbour bay. You can go left or right, but you come back the same way. So we walked united kingdom postal codes Eastwards. Through a small town, shops selling all kinds of miss matched things. and quite a few churches. We strolled along and stopped for filming as Mr, MM videos everything! He was taking my photo as I wanted one for this blog and I had dressed as I do in dress code of the region. A man stopped and said would you like me take a photo of the two of you?
After a while we had walked quite a way and it was very hot, so we headed to a small hotel that looked closed, but it soon swung into action when we entered and asked for drinks. We ordered a fruit punch and when it arrived it was really good. Full of fresh fruit and coconut. So by the time we walked back to town, Capt. Brown and I had quite a few photos taken together united kingdom postal codes and we were almost related as we both have a mutual friend on the Azura, plus Captain Brown is a Yorkshire man:-) We parted company and arranged to meet for drinks on the next formal night.
So after a bit of shopping, not that we bought much apart from a pair of funny sunglasses with palm trees on the frames for my dressing up box and a flag of Madre an Samoa for a friend who collects flags. We decided to get a taxi and go view the island
united kingdom postal codes It is very lush and stunningly beautiful. We drove East taking the same road we had walked earlier. This time we carried on through the tuna canning area. We were heading for the famous Bare Foot bar.
This is on a wonderful stretch united kingdom postal codes of scenic.coastline.When we arrived half of the ship were there all queuing to get in.We went down the steps into the place and it was a scrum there The owners were trying it sort it out and they had a big sign saying there was a cover charge if $10 per person. There were no available tables, but I did see the table where Solent Richard had sat on his visit.
So we decided not to bother. Our taxi man said the cover charge was a new thing him and we decided they were cashing in on the cruise ship passengers. So we drove a very short distance to the next bay and there is a bar there. The bay is called $2 Beach and they have a cover charge and it is you guessed united kingdom postal codes it. $2. So a refresher and on our way again to take photos of the idealic beach scenes. We did not have time to go to the opposite side of the island. When got back to town we had enough time left go walk to the old Rainmaker hotel that I remembered from 1981. It has had a rough time over the years, being destroyed by cyclones, tsunami, just neglect. However, part of it has been saved by a businessman united kingdom postal codes who bought part of it and has restored it. The rest of it remains in tatters, Shame!
The restored part is now known as Sadies. by the Sea. We went in and ordered a fruit punch after enjoying the one in the morning. However, this one was very disappointing .No fresh fruit and no coconut! Still we were glad we had been there and I was able to look at the place as it was all those years ago.
Back on the ship we had a sailaway party and I wore my grass skirt along with some other people who are now getting into the party mode. I tried to dance with my arm in a sling. united kingdom postal codes ( Not easy but I shuffled and waved one arm in the air when needed.
Next day we were in APIA Samoa. united kingdom postal codes Rather like Pago Pago but more civilised. More shops but a lot more expensive. We walked all morning and saw a folklore show. We visited the local markets and the fish markets where they had caught huge yellow fin tuna. Wandered around and took in the sights. Then headed to the famous Aggie Grey's Hotel for a drink and lunch. This hotel made famous or claims fame to do with the film South Pacific but so does Bloody Mary's in Bora Bora. Any how it had just reopened after been damaged in January this year after a cyclone. There was still a lot of evidence of this and the tsunamis that have hit these islands over the past few years.
We had four days at sea. Very windy but hot. Crossed the line for the second time. The ship did a crossing the line ceremony. I did not go to it as it was daft the first one they did . No passengers take place only cruise staff although this time they did have a fish for people to kiss if they wanted to do so. On other ships I have crossed the line on passengers take part if they are first timers. united kingdom postal codes Last year on QM2 even the entertainers united kingdom postal codes went into the deep as did staff and passengers alike if they were doing the crossing for the first time. Known as Pollywogs till the have been initiated the they become Shellbacks All good fun usually.
Immigration boarded the ship so e had to do face to face inspections. All went swiftly and they were actually united kingdom postal codes friendly Americans and we had a laugh with our man. I cant sign forms so left them blank but Mr, MM was allowed to sign for me in front of the immigration officer.
However, the only grumpy people were the passengers. I passed a couple on the way back to my cabin. united kingdom postal codes The lady stared at me arm which was in a sling in the Lei. I overheard her say to her husband. Well. Nobody is going to mistake her as a tourist! He said how ridiculous!.
One guy stopped me the other week first a sailaway party to tell me he hated the colour of my hair. It is horrid he said. So I replied united kingdom postal codes to him. Well you were not the person who I had in mind when I dressed this morning.. He huffed and moved on. I was wearing a multi coloured wig at the time. He just didn't get it!
Back to Honolulu. We walked a short distance into the downtown area and it was Sunday. Not a car around or many people. It was St Patrick's day. We came across the KAWAIHA'O CHURCH. Also known as the Westminster united kingdom postal codes Abbey of Hawaii. There was a service taking place so we went in. It ended with the congregation singing united kingdom postal codes a hymn to the tune of Danny Boy.
When we arrived it was still before united kingdom postal codes midday and there were crowds united kingdom postal codes of people gathering as there was a St Patrick day parade united kingdom postal codes to start at 12-00 noon. Lots of vintage cars all decorated in green and floats being prepared. The parade started and thousands of people lined the long street that the parade was to take. Mr, MM filmed it all and we were given green necklaces and shamrocks. A massive party spirit all around. Afterwards we walked and eventually went to the Hotel Moana on the beach. This is an old colonial type hotel looks rather similar to the Peninsular in Hong Kong.
More walking followed and some retail therapy. united kingdom postal codes Hawaiian matching united kingdom postal codes top and skirt for $19 or two for $35. I only bought one which is not like me at all! Shame as it is quite nice but we will be in Honolulu united kingdom postal codes next year God willing!
