UPDATE, 2:10 P.M .: Widespread groundings, delays, cancellations and such raise the question about whether American Airlines will run afoul of consumer protection rules adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation to keep airlines from leaving passengers on airplanes forever.
The DOT adopted regulations several years ago that said passengers on domestic flights had to be allowed travel channel network the opportunity to get off the airplane after they've been held on a grounded airplane for three hours. They also have been offered some food or water after a certain time.
Those regulations stemmed from a Dec. 29, 2006, debacle in which American Airlines had to divert dozens of flights travel channel network to surrounding airports after a string of thunderstorms kept Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport closed for hours.
travel channel network One displeased passenger, Kate Hanni of California, was so upset about being held captive for hours on a parked airplane in Austin that she started a movement to force airlines to treat passengers better. The regulations, and potential penalties, are the result.
If you feel that any special management requests related to this outage are not contractually permissible, you may ask to speak to your chief pilot. travel channel network However, if directed to perform the duty, please do so and then file a grievance fact sheet.
My son just called and said they are getting off the plane and was told all AA flights have been cancelled. I boarded and AA Flight 1664 at 11:20 (11:50 Departure) in MIA bound for ATL they announced the problem just as they were closing the door we sat there for about an hour..the pilot gave frequent updates, explaining the problem. Around 12:45 EST he gave us the option of deplaning but said we could not return if we did I quickly booked a Delta flight leaving at 2:00 PM and left the plane
Debbie Yorek, of Fort Worth, has been waiting travel channel network for over an hour to pick up her daughter and granddaughter who landed from a flight from Indianapolis on time but had not been able to deplane. Their gate was changed, though boards didn t reflect that change either.
UPDATE, 1:43 P.M.: The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed the ground stop. GROUNDSTOP IMPLEMENTED BY ATCSCC ON AMERICAN AIRLINES NATIONWIDE AND AMR AMERICAN EAGLE INTO DFW, LGA, AND ORD AT THE REQUEST OF AMERICAN OPS. STOP REQUESTED AS RESULT OF AAL SABRE SYSTEM FAILURE.
The computer problems that are delaying American s flights and messing up its reservation system travel channel network are apparently also giving outdated information to airport display boards and online flight-tracking systems.
American s reservation and booking tool, Sabre, is offline, American spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said at midday. We re working to resolve the issue as quickly as we can. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience. (American subsequently absolved travel channel network Sabre of any blame. We apologize to Sabre customers for confusion. travel channel network )
We note that FlightStats.com at noon showed that 91 percent of American s flights travel channel network to that point had departed on time, with 89 percent arriving on time. If the computer problems persist, those numbers will probably nosedive.
