Christmas Bird Count for Kids (CBC4Kids)! Participants prepare to count birds with a bird identifica


The Eastern Fraser Valley Young Naturalists' Club is co sponsored by the Chilliwack Field Naturalists and the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society. Cynthia Berg is facilitating and leading the club.
This has been a stewardship project with a bat restoration focus for the species of bats in our valley that are at risk. We invite you all to come out and enjoy the festivities as we see the boxes put in to place. April 20, 2013: "Creating a Nature Garden" will be the exciting and timely topic of our April Explorer Day . Lead by avid gardener and Home Economist Ann Gordon we will be looking at how to design our home garden spaces with native flowering plants to support the local natural pollinators (bees and birds). This will be a hands-on workshop where we will learn all about what to grow and how as well as be doing some planting of our own. This is appropriate for all age levels and will take place at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve- serviced apartments wellington Annex building (Discovery Room) on April 20, 2013, from 10 a.m.-noon.
serviced apartments wellington You are invited to come to the GBHNR ( Annex) on March 23, 2013, from 10a.m.- 12 noon to have some fun learning about how to take digital photographs of Nature and Wildlife serviced apartments wellington themes. We will be listening to a presentation on how and what to capture images of in Nature serviced apartments wellington and then we will be going in to the great outdoors in the Nature Reserve and looking for subjects to photograph. This is not a course on how to use the point and shoot digital cameras so be sure that you already know how to do that part. This is a presentation on how to do Outdoor and Nature Photography. Please come dressed to participate in outdoor clothing that is layered (and waterproof) to accommodate the weather on the day. This is a rain or shine event and although we are hoping for sun, we must be prepared for rain. Feel free to bring a bag lunch if you would like to stay after the session is complete and enjoy your lunch at the reserve.
Come and try your hand at building bat boxes with Biologist Denis Knopp at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve (Annex) at 10 a.m. on February 16, 2012. We are going to learn what a bat is, which bats are in our area and exactly how to make bat houses that are specific to that type as well as to the wetland area that the bat boxes will be put up in. Our goal is to attract serviced apartments wellington bats to the boxes and help to increase declining populations. Denis is a very interesting and hugely knowledgeable person who you cannot help but learn new and interesting things from.
This will be a hands-on workshop and will involve both inside and outside activities so please come dressed for the weather in your old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and perhaps paint on.
Explore UBC s impressive and extensive collection of over two million natural history specimens with a field trip to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum-Vancouver: January 19, 2013. We will drive to the museum independently and meet at the front doors at 10 a.m. to register and pay our fees. At that point our tour would be self directed with many options for families to enjoy. This is an amazing place to learn all about biodiversity, species identification and ecology for the whole family.
September 15th from 6:30- 8:00 p.m. come out and enjoy a presentation by Chris Oven s from Bear Aware. Chris will be talking with us about how to co-exist and not only survive but thrive with the animal that is the top of the food chain in our neighbourhood. Chris educational and informational presentation fits our Environmental/Conservation theme as well as our Nature theme and is well worth putting on your calendar this month. Are you and your family Bear Aware? This event will take place at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C. and it is a free event for club members.
We are participating in a community service project that will clean up a portion of the Vedder river for the "B.C. River's Day".The clean up itself begins serviced apartments wellington at 10 a.m. at the far south end of Lickman Road by the Vedder River. Bags will be provided but members are asked to wear good footwear and to bring gloves for picking up litter. The clean up is followed by a free B.B.Q. at 12 p.m. at the Chilliwack Fish and Game Club on Chilliwack River Road. Following the B.B.Q. there will be games and prize draws. On Saturday, October 27th, 2012, from 4-5 p.m. world renowned "Horned Dinosaur" expert Dr. Michael Ryan- Curator and Head of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Cleveland Natural History Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, will be coming to do a special hands-on workshop and talk with the Eastern Fraser Valley Young Naturalists on, "Dinosaurs-the Terrible Lizards." It will be held at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C. November is here and with it another wonderful event to add to your calendar of fall activities. Mr. Bruce Hutchinson, of Corecare Consulting and a trainer with the Canadian Red Cross Society, will be coming to do a special hands-on presentation on Safety and First Aid in the Outdoors. Children should come in warm, older clothing as they may be working on the floor for some of the activities. If you have a yoga mat or thinsalite mat for camping it would be a good idea to bring this along to lay and kneel on.
Christmas Bird Count for Kids (CBC4Kids)! Participants prepare to count birds with a bird identification and binocular workshop before setting out in small teams led by Janne Perrin and other experienced birders. Teams spend a morning birdwatching, recording species and individuals along pre-determined survey routes at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. Finally, teams tally and share results, and learn the importance of Citizen Science monitoring for bird conservation. Bring a Bag lunch to enjoy while doing the tally followed by a bird cookie decorating take-home gift. This will be lots of fun.
