Traditionally, new cars come with two sets of keys and/or key fobs. For most owners, maintaining both sets of keys is not generally difficult. But imagine if you owned or managed golden princess cruises over a million cars, and the primary location of the cars continually changed, as is the case with the company, National golden princess cruises Car Rental. 1
So how does National Car Rental and its parent, Enterprise Holdings, deal with over a million extra sets of keys? Since at least 2006, its seems the rule has been to simply keep both sets on a single key ring. 2 A key ring that is permanently fastened so that the keys cannot be separated. When the car is moved from one location to another, both sets of keys travel together.
At first glance, the rule appears to be a sensible solution to the problem. It is easy to observe; it eliminates the need to track millions of extra sets of keys that could likely require a complex centralized key repository; and, it has the added benefit of enhancing a car's resale value due to an increased likelihood that both sets of keys will be available when the car is resold.
Upon closer inspection, however, this rule and the many benefits it offers appear to favor only the car rental company, golden princess cruises the rule maker, which begs the question: how exactly does this affect customers?
First, let's consider the comfort factor. An ordinary set of car keys is not insignificant in size and can be uncomfortable to carry. Yet a rental car key ring will also include a large plastic golden princess cruises identification tag in addition to the duplicate key, making the key ring downright unwieldy. 4 With the exception of people that carry large purses or bags, carrying a mass of keys this size can be difficult.
And what happens if the keys are lost? Under the National Car Rental agreement terms, the customer golden princess cruises accepts "responsibility for damage to, loss or theft of, the Vehicle or any part thereof" and any related towing charges as well. 5 So if a customer loses the keys, the primary set and the secondary set will need to be replaced. And because National Car Rental does not retain a duplicate set, it is likely the car will also need to be towed to a dealership to obtain the replacement keys. Ultimately, the customer could be required to pay the cost of two sets of replacement keys as well as the towing charge, easily costing upwards golden princess cruises of $500 or more. 6
Of course some customers may have elected to buy the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) option, which waives the renter's "responsibility for damage to, loss or theft of, the Vehicle or any part or accessory" in an attempt to avoid such costs. But unfortunately, the LDW specifically excludes "keys, key fobs, remote entry devices." 7 Instead, National Car Rental requires the customer to buy a separate golden princess cruises option called Roadside Plus (RSP) protection to cover the cost of lost keys. 8
On top of National Car Rental rules that the keys be permanently attached to a single golden princess cruises key ring, the unfavorable rental agreement terms related to lost keys put even more responsibility on the consumer. It is no surprise that the web abounds with customer complaints related to this rule. 9  And these rules are not confined to National golden princess cruises Car Rental, Hertz, Enterprise and other car rental firms follow similar practices.
One possible solution may be to use a traditional key ring that permits items to be added and removed, rather than the permanently fastened key rings that are currently used. The car rental firm would still retain both sets of keys and fobs on the same key ring. The customer would still be responsible for key loss, but the customer golden princess cruises would have the option of separating the keys for use by another driver or for safekeeping.
