For all the other qualities of Carnival Vista, it's probably these two that will make the headlines.

Last week Carnival unveiled las vegas nascar tickets its new ship, Carnival Vista . It comes with a host of new features to stun and amaze, not least the first IMAX cinema at sea and a kind of thrill ride high above the deck in a recumbent bicycle. But there s something las vegas nascar tickets that the brains behind these novel ideas missed an idea that unites every cruiser
For all the other qualities of Carnival Vista, it’s probably these two that will make the headlines. Why? Because las vegas nascar tickets they’re gimmicks. And it’s the gimmicks that people remember. The first climbing wall at sea, the first ice rink, the first lawn, the first ice bar. Even posher ships have fallen into the trap, like Viking Star, with its snow cave and the first infinity pool at sea (which sounds nice) and Europa 2, with its Kneipp foot pool in the spa (meh).
Whether or not a gimmick does it for you is a very personal thing. I, for example, have no interest in climbing walls (Royal Caribbean) and would never ‘walk the plank’ (NCL). But I love waterslides, which less than two decades ago were considered the height of innovation on cruise ships, so there’s no real logic here. An IMAX cinema might be quite fun on a rainy afternoon and I absolutely love the Lawn Club on Celebrity’s Solstice-class ships (although the Hot Glass Show that appeared las vegas nascar tickets on the earlier ships in the series was, in my very biased opinion, a complete waste of space). I thought the North Star capsule on Quantum of the Seas was going to be another expensive frippery but actually enjoyed it a lot and, should I sail on the ship again, would probably go up in it more than once. The Bionic Bar on Quantum, however, where drinks are prepared in plastic cups by robots, seems a bit of a folly. It’s fun, you want to try it once and I can completely see why Royal Caribbean wanted to include it on a ship that’s all about innovation – but it probably wouldn’t be a comfortable place to hang out of an evening, what with the crowds and the queues.
This is the thing about gimmicks. Do they actually add value to a new ship or are they just attention grabbers? To me, it’s the other features of the ship that count – more mundane things like the comfort of the cabins, the choice of restaurants, the presence of a really classy cocktail bar. And let’s not forget the itinerary.
I understand that fun new features are a way of creating an identity for the ship and often, a source of revenue for the cruise line. I also like the idea that cruising can represent the cutting edge of the holiday industry. But when’s it going to stop? I wonder if we’d accept a big new ship without a host of rides and robots, or if it would simply fail to lure the crowds? Perhaps, when it comes to the joy of a holiday at sea, we’ve lost sight of the bigger picture.
