I have found price differences sure. But I'm was finding almost 2x the cost to rent in an out of SF

Working our California Summer trip. We were going to fly or drive to LA from SFO and not consider one way rental. But my one way rentals LAX to SFO are actually coming up way cheaper to do the one way rental!
If rental company is interested in getting a car to a specific location it is cheaper for you to drive it than for them to truck it or pay someone to drive there. It looks like they want to move the car to SFO.
I don't understand why this is even surprising, you are renting in two completely different cities and of course rental prices vary between cities, depending on the market. The one-way cost of roundtrip airline tickets to italy rental is pretty irrelevant in many cases if it is a national chain and the two cities are in the same state.
Answering the OP, yes, it is almost always cheaper to rent going LAX to SFO than the reverse because for some reason most people go north to south and the rental car companies need to get the cars back north. Often times people on this and other travel forums are advised to make the California central coast trip north to south because you will then be driving on the ocean side of the road for easier pull outs. But, it is just a two lane road and in my experience cost of roundtrip airline tickets to italy does not matter.
