Most people think that dog massages at luxury, pet-friendly hotels are a prime example of how pet parents spoil their furry friends. But dog massages offer many tail-wagging health benefits for Fifi.
There is a huge misconception about animal massage; that it is just another foofy spa service for our overly pampered dogs in diamond necklackes and Prada boots, says Tom Galligan, a Certified Animal Massage Practitioner event and travel planning whose Nose to Tail Animal Massage is available at La Quinta Resort Club and AquaPaws in La Quinta, Calif. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Dog massages are offered at an increasing amount of four- and five-star hotels, including Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas and  Trump International Hotel Las Vegas . At some hotels, pet parents and their dogs can enjoy a massage together. For example, there s the Me My Best Buddy at La Quinta.
Galligan points out many instances where dog massages can help to fur babies, including: young puppies, sporting dogs, working dogs, older dogs, dogs recovering from injuries or surgeries and basically all dogs.
Not that canines should be the only animal to benefit from massage. Cats will also appreciate a good rub. And Galligan, who massages horses as well, says,  Just as in people, massage helps reduce stress, increase flexibility and movement, enhances circulation and contributes to the overall ability of the body to function properly.
He recommends one or two maintenance massages a month for older animals and more frequent for those animals rehabilitating from an injury. Massages often last 25 to 45 minutes for dogs and 60 minutes for horses.
