It seems that wherever ones goes in the southeast these days, they are soon to encounter a Shovels Rope fan. It s with good reason, as the husband and wife duo of Michael Trent and Carry Ann Hearst have toured relentlessly over the past few years, either behind their solo ventures or their first joint release. Veteran rocker come platinum pop producer Butch Walker has even taken notice and had the pair join him on a few of his tours. So with the fever pitch at an all-time high, one does wonder if the album will stack up or if the band will fall victim to a sophomore slump even before they get to where they seem to be inevitably heading at this point.
The album kicks off with the autobiographical "Birmingham," phillippines airline tickets for sale which highlights the bands knack for a harmony (in spades), as does the next song "Keeper. While the duo demonstrates their tightness and intertwining vocals on nearly every song, the album truly comes alive when one takes a backseat and let's the other one shine. This is evident on the third song, and title track "O' Be Joyful", when in the beginning phillippines airline tickets for sale you can practically hear the charisma drip from Carry Ann Hearst. The woeful yin to Hearst's raucous yang, Trent leads the somber "Lay Low" to a great degree of success.
While a lot of modern albums tend to bog down towards the end as the singles are pushed to the forefront, O' Be Joyful doesn't really come alive until the second half. While the first five tracks are solid, they all seem very constrained, especially coming from a band who is known for their energetic live set. Luckily this is remedied with the sixth track "Kemba's Got The Cabbage Mouth Blues, which while sounding phillippines airline tickets for sale like a cross between a hoedown and a commercial for Southern culture, it seems to let the duo cut loose in the latter half of the disc.
The band breaks free of the ties that categorize them here on tracks like the Danny Elfman -esque ballad "Carnival" and the dark minor-key dirge of "Shank Hill St." The album's highlight is the 50's doo-wop by the way of Butch Walker pop ditty "Cavalier." All double-tap on the snare and unexpected vocal twists and turns, this song showcases just how good the band is at what they do when they are on.
While there is plenty here for fans of the band to like, there isn't really much that will bring in new bodies to the shows or even the record store. The band's live charm while still evident, is much more toned down, making them feel more like The Traveling Wilburys than the next Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn that Hearst has steadily phillippines airline tickets for sale drawn comparisons to. In the end we're left with a collection of good songs from a great band, with only a few of them being memorable.
So will the band cross over like they've been threatening to for the past few years? More than likely not with this record, as there isn't really a song that will earworm it's way into the public consciousness anytime phillippines airline tickets for sale soon (except possibly "Cavalier" or "Birmingham"). Hearst has shown she can write stand out singles phillippines airline tickets for sale like her True Blood hit "Hell's Bells," it's just a shame she didn't bring any of them this time around. Luckily the band still remains a must-see phillippines airline tickets for sale live act, and that should carry them well on to their way to the next go-round in the studio where they hopefully bring their characteristic charisma and charm that remain the unseen phillippines airline tickets for sale third member of the band.
