Saying that aces on the golf course are rare ranks up there with understated truisms like "Caddyshack" is funny and Republicans were disappointed with the outcome of last week's presidential election.
The odds of the average golfer making a hole-in-one has been calculated to be something like 1 in 12,500 by smart folks who probably don't play a lot of golf but do a lot of math. So for any given average player to make six aces would kind of be like opening an oyster to find the winning Powerball ticket wrapped around a black pearl.
In October, the 77-year-old retiree reached half a dozen 1s when he aced the seventh hole at the Savannah Golf Club. Brown has been a member at the Savannah Golf Club since 1979, and all of his feats of accuracy have come on his home course.
"You have to be very lucky," said the honest Brown, who said he plays about twice a week at the Savannah Golf Club since retiring in 2004. "That one last month hit the ground and went right out of sight, but I've hit that same flagstick and had it bounce 10 feet away eight or 10 times. Sure you have to hit the ball well, but it's mostly luck.
Brown's other aces came in 1988, 1990, 2003, '04 and '07, and he's got the witnessed scorecards from all but one of those rounds. The Savannah Golf Club has proposed hanging a plaque st johns airport rental cars in the clubhouse to celebrate Brown's six "lucky" shots.
"I told my wife about it and she said to make sure to leave room for one or two more," Brown said. "I told them I don't mind acknowledging it but let's not blow this out of proportion. It's a little unique, but let's not make a big deal out of it."
Contrary to Brown's humility, aces are a big, momentous, mysterious deal. I have been fortunate enough to make two aces, but I will always regret I only saw one of them — grass flew in my eye the first time I made a hole-in-one st johns airport rental cars and I had to rely on a description and celebration st johns airport rental cars from the guy playing behind me who had previously been impatiently waiting for me to tee off.
On the flip side of a blind squirrel like me finding an acorn, there are inexplicable circumstances like scratch st johns airport rental cars golfers and touring pros who have never seen a tee shot disappear into the cup. And somewhere in the ether where the silliest secrets of the universe are stored, there's an explanation for the story of my graduate school roommate, Byron Holland.
The grandson of former st johns airport rental cars University of Virginia basketball coach and athletic director Terry Holland, Byron was a good athlete in his early 20s who had never played golf when I met him. While Byron faithfully studied and went to class, I tended to gravitate toward the golf course most afternoons and his curiosity finally got the better of him.
He asked me to help him learn to play golf, which is a little like asking a golden retriever who's had a couple of beers to help you learn calculus. Nonetheless, we spent a few sessions on the range practicing the most rudimentary elements of the game and, even for a beginner, Byron was unquestionably the worst golfer I have ever seen (and that's saying something).
Despite showing no aptitude for the golf swing whatsoever, Byron decided to take his personal circus to the course. Predictably, Byron recorded a 13 on the first hole, but what happened on the second hole will be etched in my memory st johns airport rental cars forever.
After I hit my tee shot on the green of the 165-yard par-3, I stepped safely behind my partner and told him to swing a 6-iron and try to keep his head down. After maybe 200 practice swings that dug a 2-foot trench in that tee box, he lofted a perfectly struck shot Tiger couldn't have hit better that arced in a perfect st johns airport rental cars parabola before bouncing once and disappearing under the shadow of the flagstick.
Martha Reardon turned in the low round of the tournament with an 84 in the first round to claim medalist honors. Bell and Reardon tied for first in the first flight, Allen won the second flight and Penny Johnson won the third flight.
Silvers, who is currently appearing on the Golf Channels' "Big Break" reality show, finished tied for 11th in the first stage played at Callaway Garden's Mountain View Golf Course in Pine Mountain. He has accumulated more than 20 mini-tour victories since turning professional in 2010 after playing collegiate golf at the University of South Carolina.
The second stage of PGA Tour Q-school takes place at six different locations around the country this month, and the field is comprised of approximately 450 players who advanced through the first stage qualifiers. The field at Southern Hills will include former PGA Tour winners Eric Axley, Arjun Atwal, Daniel st johns airport rental cars Chopra, st johns airport rental cars Robert Damron, Marco Dawson, Bubba Dickerson, Robert Gamez, Ryuji Imada, Lee Janzen and Garrett Willis.
Wilmington Island Club head professional Patrick Richardson and assistant pro Don Vickery conduct st johns airport rental cars the practice st johns airport rental cars range and on-course instruction in all areas of the game, and both are Georgia PGA Recognized Junior Leaders.
"We want to make sure that introducing st johns airport rental cars the game to juniors is part of the process to secure the future st johns airport rental cars of the game," Richardson said. "We believe introducing the game of golf at an early age is great for life lessons and improving social skills. We've had numerous success stories with our former juniors for the past 13 years and look forward to continuing to promote this wonderful game to young golfers."
