We have some clients that are doing a Bermuda itinerary with Celebrity Cruises. They were due to come back to Bayonne, New Jersey on Sunday. Because of the hurricane, the cruise line is actually cutting a day off the itinerary, she said.

Before the trip I assumed that river cruises would offer a good sampler, so that you could decide wh

A castle looms larger as it gets closer, jutting out over terraced vineyard hills that slope down to the cloudy river water. A crew member appears, clean gray vest buttoned over a white collared shirt, asking if you'd like another glass of wine. You smile, nod, sink deeper into the sundeck chaise lounge and watch as your river cruise ship floats serenely along.
For many, yes. River cruising is hot right now, with more ships and new lines flooding waterways around the world . Smaller one way cruises to hawaii ships and passenger loads make for a more intimate experience than ocean liners. It's arguably more scenic, too, as you're always close to shore.
In August I traveled one way cruises to hawaii to Europe to cruise the Danube on Viking's new longship Bragi . It was my first river cruise -- and my first cruise of any sort. Here's what I wondered before the trip and what I learned after a week on the water.
Most river cruises cater to couples age 55 and older. The passenger make-up on my boat was true to this norm: of the 186 passengers, four were younger than around 40. Nearly everyone was a couple. Nearly everyone was white. About two-thirds were from the U.S., with Great Britain next.
My travel companion and I didn't, and people noticed. We were among the under-40s on the boat, and were unfailingly asked "why are you here?" followed one way cruises to hawaii by "can you help me fix my computer/phone/iPad?" (Sigh... Sure.)
But while we didn't look like typical river cruisers (and occasionally jumped ship to check out the local nightlife scene), we enjoyed it as much as the retired couple we shared dinner with one evening. Would I come on one of these trips with my rowdy beer-swilling family? Probably not. Nor would I bring kids, though Paloma Villaverde de Rico, a journalist traveling with her daughter on my boat, reported that the trip can be fun for teens .
I would choose a river cruise if I wanted activity-filled days and early nights. It's a great option for a trip with an elderly parent or a relaxing yet social vacation with a spouse once the kids are grown and you've tired of self-catering. Some cruise companies cater to a younger one way cruises to hawaii crowd, one way cruises to hawaii with family cruises or single-friendly packages.
The first day felt a bit like the start of a fancy camp, with everyone eager to know my name, where I was from and if I'd river cruised before. one way cruises to hawaii Meals, especially dinners, were a group affair, with couples pairing, tripling or quadrupling up at four-, six- and eight-person tables.
As a cruise progresses, you start making cruise friends, people you seek out in the hallways or lounge to catch up and swap stories about what you did with your free time that day. I even heard one pair of couples who had met on the cruise talk about doing another trip together.
Like any organized tour or ocean cruise, a river cruise is a tasting menu. You land, tour and maybe have a few free hours or an overnight to explore on your own, then you're whisked one way cruises to hawaii away to the next fabulous spot.
In 8 days on my cruise we stopped in six towns and cities. I checked off many tourist to-dos. I sampled sausage from Regensburg's 900-year-old Wurstkuchl , walked Vienna's Ringstrasse and cooled down in Budapest's Szechenyi public baths . But did I really understand caf culture or Bavarian beer hall bonding? No, there wasn't enough time.
Cruise companies do their best to add culture to the itinerary, from using local guides to setting up immersive on-shore excursions. Our ship offered a German lesson and a "Taste of Austria" spread of regional sausages, pretzels and pastries.
Before the trip I assumed that river cruises would offer a good sampler, so that you could decide where you'd want to return for a deeper experience. But most passengers one way cruises to hawaii I spoke to felt that the exposure to each stop was sufficient and that spending days on the same river helped create a sense of familiarity with the region. one way cruises to hawaii Many people were more eager to choose their next river to sail than to plan a return trip to Nuremberg or Melk .
It can be. The cruise lines can dot every i and cross every t, but at the end of the day, they're at the mercy of Mother Nature, and she likes to do her own thing. No matter how detailed your schedule is, if the water's too high, as it was in June this year , routes become impassable. (Check out the video below of a close call with a low bridge.)
My cruise encountered the opposite problem -- hot, dry weather created perilously low water levels, one way cruises to hawaii causing our boat to have to speed through one way cruises to hawaii some shallows. Passengers grumbled that our time in Regensburg was cut short and an optional excursion to Weltenburg Abbey and the scenic Danube Narrows was canceled. But if we had stuck to the original schedule and the water had dropped another 9 centimeters, we might have been bussing to Budapest (or at least to a different boat farther one way cruises to hawaii down the river).
Every ship in every fleet will have different food offerings. one way cruises to hawaii Expect buffet breakfasts (on our Viking ship the offerings changed slightly day to day -- cantaloupe one day, watermelon the next -- which kept things feeling fresh) and multiple options for lunch and dinner.
Our ship had a popular daily deck-side buffet lunch, which was generally standard grill fare: hotdogs, cheeseburgers, chicken fingers and vegetarian-friendly sides like pasta salad and French fries. Downstairs, the main kitchen served a multicourse sit-down meal. Dinners were longer sit-down one way cruises to hawaii affairs, with an array of appetizers, main courses and desserts.
Regional flavors were represented (there was always a locally influenced dish on the menu), but familiar dishes one way cruises to hawaii had a strong presence as well. You could conceivably travel through Germany, Austria and Hungary for a week eating Caesar salads and roast chicken. And people did.
Budapest and Vienna were my most anticipated ports, so it was perfect to save them for the end. The trip was a build-up to the most energetic and explorable stops. Going the opposite direction would have felt anticlimactic to me. Travelers more interested in small medieval towns might prefer to start with the big cities and wind down with some quieter regional discoveries.
I expected my river cruise to resemble a country club. Viking 's service was on par with that standard, but the dress code was far more casual. (It varies by company though; Uniworld suggests bringing a formal jacket and asks no shorts at dinner.) one way cruises to hawaii There was, however, an unofficial uniform: khaki shorts and a polo (often untucked) for the men, linen-y capris and t-shirts for the ladies. Reinforced sandals or sneakers for everyone.
The only motion we encountered was inside one way cruises to hawaii the locks. It was a tight squeeze, especially when there was another boat in there. Occasionally at night I could feel the ship lightly bounce off a lock wall, but it was nothing more than a gentle reminder that I was on a moving vessel.
This depends on your boat and location. The Wi-Fi on my boat worked fairly reliably throughout the ride except for when I used Instagram. Uploading photos seemed too much for the system. Service was spotty inside one way cruises to hawaii locks as well (not surprising, given you're in a giant bunker).
Most mornings one way cruises to hawaii begin docked at a port; the ship either has spent the night or sailed through the night to reach its first destination. After a buffet one way cruises to hawaii breakfast at your leisure, you'll pick up your tour group number assignment from the concierge and disembark. (Unlike ocean cruises, port tours are usually included one way cruises to hawaii in your river cruise price.)
Depending one way cruises to hawaii on the stop, a guide leads you around town by foot or on a bus. He or she dishes out about an hour's worth of history, local lore and places to buy or send a postcard, which you can hear through headphones and a portable radio that hangs from your neck. You'll have at least one bathroom break.
After the tour you'll get some time to explore town -- anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. Just don't miss the boat. You'll re-board and shove off down the river to the next stop, which is sometimes a few hours away, sometimes an overnight ride.
Many passengers choose to lunch on board, even if they have free time in port, because it's already paid for. As the ship sails through the afternoon, people settle in for various forms of relaxation. You can join a lecture in the lounge and learn about things like the UN or German phrases. Politely squeeze through one way cruises to hawaii the crowd on the ship's bow to snap a picture (or 30) of canal lock doors opening. Sit in a sun deck chaise lounge and gaze at the passing scenery.
A gentle chime announces the omnipresent voice of your program director: it's 5:30 p.m., time for happy hour and an overview of tomorrow's schedule. Buy a drink at the bar and make small talk with the couple on the couch across from you.
Soon it's time to head to dinner. Do you sit with the couple you dined with last night or opt for a table of new faces? one way cruises to hawaii Settle in at a six-person table and greet your soon-to-be-new-friends. You may miss the sunset; dinner's more about the socializing than the view.
After the last course is cleared and the waiter has topped off your glass with one more pour of wine (because at dinner it's free!), retreat to the lounge. one way cruises to hawaii A piano man sings gentle background music. (He then surprises you with Maroon 5's "Payphone.") A few people one way cruises to hawaii may dance, but most trickle off to bed. By 11 p.m. only a handful of cruisers remain; one is asleep in his armchair. You call it a night.

At six weeks: If the price looks good, go ahead and book. If the tickets look a little high but your

Four of us were flying from New York to Miami, and we tried to be responsible. We checked in on ticket prices as early as summertime—unusually high. We tried again closer to the holiday—no great luck.
So I spoke to Kellie Pelletier, the airfare expert at Jetsetter , to help me—and you—acquire holiday inn sunspree montego bay that magical power. In addition to giving me the inside scoop on ways to save on plane tickets, she broke down exactly holiday inn sunspree montego bay when to buy tickets for everything from Thanksgiving to late summer getaways.
Remember it’s a gamble. When in doubt, booking holiday inn sunspree montego bay earlier is safer. If you wait, fares could go up or down, and usually fares go up by more than they go down (read: going down $50 vs. going up by $300). Only bide your time if your flight isn’t too full and you know the price is a lot higher than it should be.
Use online tools. Kayak’s “Hacker” tool can help you find two separate one-way flights to make a round trip that saves more money. Kayak also offers a fare chart so you can see trends in the ticket prices, and Bing created a price predictor tool to help you guess if fares are going up or down.
Consider a destination serviced by low-cost carriers. holiday inn sunspree montego bay Carriers like AirTran, Southwest and Frontier drive down all airfares along their routes. So it might make sense sometimes to drive longer to go to a bigger airport with low-cost carriers, since even major carriers’ flights will likely be cheaper.
Then, Pelletier let me in on the best practices for buying plane tickets for every occasion. Just keep in mind that airline prices are an art, not a science—above all, use common sense and remember these are rules of thumb rather than word of law.
When to buy: Pelletier says, “Recent fare analysis by the Airlines holiday inn sunspree montego bay Reporting Corporation, which processes ticket transactions for airlines and travel agencies, reported that over the past four years passengers paid the lowest price for domestic flights when buying holiday inn sunspree montego bay just about six weeks in advance.”
At six weeks: If the price looks good, go ahead and book. If the tickets look a little high but your flight is pretty holiday inn sunspree montego bay full, buy anyway because fares will probably only go up. If the price is high and your flight is pretty empty, holiday inn sunspree montego bay you can choose to wait a week or two to see if prices decrease.
Bonus tip: Prices will typically be lowest if you avoid the usual Friday to Sunday weekend cycle. If you’re going for a weekend, try using the “weekend trip” option under the “flexible trip” search on most web resources like Kayak. This lets you define weekend however you want, whether Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday, so you can find the cheapest options.
Pelletier told me Thanksgiving is the absolute hardest to buy tickets for, because everyone is trying to fly out and return on the same days (Wednesday to Sunday). Christmas is more flexible because people choose different days off. Notice when holidays fall midweek. For example, if July 4 th falls on Wednesday some people take time off before, some after. This allows you more flexibility holiday inn sunspree montego bay in buying tickets.
holiday inn sunspree montego bay When to buy: At least three months out. Aim to buy Thanksgiving tickets the Tuesday after Labor Day; don’t book too early because rates will usually come down at least a little after the summer, when rates are high because gas is expensive.
Bonus tip: If you can, avoid Sunday flights and traditional holiday inn sunspree montego bay travel days. That could mean leaving before and coming back later than most people, or flying on the holiday itself. Pelletier told us you can often save 50% on a ticket by flying Christmas Eve or day. “We saved $300 per ticket around Thanksgiving for our family of four,” she told us, “by flying out the Saturday before Thanksgiving and coming back the Saturday after. Not everyone can swing that with their work schedules, so my advice is to leave Thanksgiving day and return on Saturday for cheaper fares.”
If you’re looking to travel this summer, book your flights right away because there will almost certainly be more fare increases to come. Extra hint: Pelletier recommends taking earlier morning flights because rain delays are a lot more common in the summer.
When to buy: Three months before holiday inn sunspree montego bay your departure, depending on where you’re going. More than any other season, buy early because gas prices are notoriously high. Prices usually only go up as the summer progresses.
Bonus tip: Extend the summer holiday inn sunspree montego bay for better prices—if you can book your vacation for May or September, you’re likely to save as much as 25-50% on air and hotel. You can also find deals when certain regions have slow seasons because of school schedules. For instance, Northeast schools are usually in session through mid-June, so beaches in New England offer deals in early June. Southeastern schools start back in mid-August, so beach destinations in South Carolina and Florida may offer late August deals.
Autumn isn’t typically leisure travel season since kids are back in school, so there are a lot of great fare sales, particularly last-minute ones around late September or October. If you are open and flexible, this is a great season for an off-peak leisure trip to a mountainous area or somewhere off-season like Mexico.
When to buy: You can wait longer and be more open to last-minute deals (like two to four weeks in advance) in the fall. If you need to go somewhere in particular, though, buy six weeks in advance so you aren’t gambling.
Bonus tip: Avoid fall convention hotspots like Las Vegas, NYC and Orlando. A great time for a cheap leisure trip is between Thanksgiving and Christmas. For trips during that time, start looking in September.
Aside from the obvious winter holidays, traveling in the winter will depend a lot on where you’re going. If it’s a warm getaway, you’re buying in the high season. If you’re going somewhere less popular (read: to and from colder locales) you’ll have more leeway.
When to buy: If you’re going skiing, book extremely early because ski season is so short and flights to tiny ski towns are often small—at least three months in advance, if not as early as September! holiday inn sunspree montego bay If you’re traveling somewhere warm, give yourself three months. If you’re going to an unpopular destination, you can play closer to the bone and try to time the best prices. (Check out the section about off-peak travel for the plan of attack.)
Spring is pretty holiday inn sunspree montego bay expensive across the board because of spring break and Easter holidays. Spring breaks are different for college kids, families, public schools, private schools … Find out when spring breaks are in your region and try to avoid those dates like the plague. You can search your county’s school district’s website for the dates.
When to buy: If you’re traveling any time during your area’s spring break, at least three months in advance. If not, you can look at how full your flight is and try to time your purchase for the best prices.

I just had to re-schedule a flight through Delta and it was a bit of a hassle, I didn t select the extra refundable option and they wanted to charge $195! Luckily I switched from JFK to LGA and saved myself some of that money. Their $150 re-schedule holiday inn sunspree montego bay fee is pretty hefty.
What s the reasoning behind holiday inn sunspree montego bay waiting until six to eight weeks out for most non-peak holiday inn sunspree montego bay flights? Why wouldn t it be better to book six to eight months out if possible? Trust the advice, but wondering what the logic behind it is.
Many airlines run sales closer to the time that can net a real savings For me it was 300 cheaper to book 4 weeks prior than it was 6 weeks prior But I can drive to my destination if fares don t fall, so I can afford to wait it out.
Basically, waiting is a gamble, as is trying to time tickets holiday inn sunspree montego bay at all. The six week mark was derived from a study of airfares that found that that was the point at which, on average, fares were lowest for a given route, but that s definitely a rule of thumb and not a set-in-stone rule.
Even more than simply waiting, Kellie suggested holiday inn sunspree montego bay looking at how full your flight is by using that trick of selecting a seat if it s more than eight weeks out and your flight is pretty full, you re probably safer not waiting. But, if your flight is reasonably empty and the price sounds high to you, there s a decent chance, according to historical averages, holiday inn sunspree montego bay that your fare could be cheaper holiday inn sunspree montego bay around that six week mark. And if your flight holiday inn sunspree montego bay isn t too full, the risk level probably isn t too high in waiting.
We had to purchase tickets immediately after my mother-in-law passed, and the tickets were very expensive.  I assumed the airline would give us a break when I presented the death certificate (after the trip), but they said no.  That s cold!
Although holiday inn sunspree montego bay there are some useful tips in this article, I have to disagree with some of them.  Our family celebrates Christmas at my brother s in California so by knowing that I m going to need a ticket later in the year I start looking as soon as the flights become available.  I ve managed to get some great rates by shopping early. holiday inn sunspree montego bay One year I bought a nonstop round trip ticket from Kansas City to San Francisco for $214 for Christmas.  Last year I paid $289.  Any flight under $300 is considered holiday inn sunspree montego bay good, but I thought holiday inn sunspree montego bay the $214 was a steal.  I seriously think it was an error made on the part of the airline.  If you know you are going to be traveling there s no reason to wait.  Sometimes it require

The I Lift NY crane is ready to set sections of pre-fabricated steel, 350 feet long each, from about 100 miles north at Port of Coeymans, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) president Darrell Waters said during last Monday’s press conference with Governor Cuomo .
So TZC got the required permits? I thought when I heard this, recalling the NYS DEC stopped work at the port this summer . Riverkeeper, Inc. — after observing the contractor working on a project still under review, hence no permits had been granted — contacted the agency, which halted TZC six days later and began an investigation.
Per a September 19 email from DEC representative Peter Constantakes, agency staff visited the Port of Coeymans after being alerted of possible violations related to work being performed by TZC, and directed the company to cease operations immediately.
“The state appears to be pushing this through without lodging orlando an environmental review. They’ll be assembling pieces critical to building the bridge, and bringing them down river,” Hudson lodging orlando River Program Director Phillip Musegaas said at the time.
In a statement dated October 8, Constantakes lodging orlando wrote, “DEC completed an investigation of this incident and has entered into an Order on Consent with Tappan Zee Constructors that addresses violations of the Environmental Conservation law. The violations pertain to the company beginning lodging orlando construction at the site prior to DEC issuing the necessary lodging orlando permits.
“Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) has been working lodging orlando closely with state and federal agencies to obtain permits for constructing our staging lodging orlando area at the Port of Coeymans,” Julian also said in her email Friday, lodging orlando adding the contractor recently received DEC and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers permits for that site.
“We’re pleased with the penalty and benefit lodging orlando payment, which makes perfect sense,” Musegaas said. “It’s a good outcome. lodging orlando The amount of time they were working without a permit was short, so the DEC action was appropriate.”
“Did our comments make a difference? The DEC addressed some of our concerns: it strengthened lodging orlando some of the conditions related to dealing with contaminated sediment they’re dredging and tightened water quality standards regarding what is allowed to be discharged into the river.”
Two 1,000-foot work trestles on the Westchester and Rockland lodging orlando shorelines support equipment and prevent excessive shoreline dredging that could harm the river and shorelines lodging orlando at the project site. Part of the Rockland trestle will be dismantled, and part will remain in place as the Thruway Authority’s permanent maintenance dock.

NEW YORK At lunchtime, Winfred Rembert traded stories last minute travel bargain uk with quilters in Harlem. In the evening, he posed with a state senator on his lap at a wine-and-cheese reception last minute travel bargain uk on the Hudson River, last minute travel bargain uk as the celebrated Newhallville folk-art leather carver got into the swing of a nascent national tour.
Rembert, a 66-year old self-taught last minute travel bargain uk artist who learned last minute travel bargain uk to tool leather in prison, left his home studio on New Haven s Newhall Street last week to spend the weekend on tour with a documentary last minute travel bargain uk about his life and to see his art hang in a prominent setting along the Hudson River.
The trip spanned two worlds and two audiences rapt by the gregarious artist s tales of his life in the segregated rural South. Rembert s leather carvings, dyed in bright colors, depict his youth in the juke joints last minute travel bargain uk and cotton fields of Cuthbert, Georgia, the horror of surviving a near-lynching, and the toil of seven years on a chain gang.
Rembert began the week in Washington, D.C. , where he spoke at a screening in the Library of Congress and tried, unsuccessfully, to deliver a hand-carved handbag to Michelle Obama. He has upcoming appearances planned in Los Angeles; Atlanta; Salem, Mass.; and Montgomery, Alabama.
On Thursday he rolled up to Harlem s Pelham Fritz Recreation Center with his wife, Patsy, a bus driver for the Hamden schools. He wore jeans, sandals, a short-sleeved white shirt, and a signature tan fedora.
Janie Alston (pictured) showed off The Black Odyssey, a quilt she put together in memory of her son, who died at the age of 16. She plans to hang it in an exhibition Tuesday in honor of Black History Month.
About 14 people, mostly African-American women, gather at the center last minute travel bargain uk on Tuesdays and Thursdays to quilt together. She and a few other ladies worked on quilts Thursday as other seniors ate lunch nearby.
They all took a break at 1 p.m. to walk into a simple, painted cinder block room, for a free, public screening of Rembert s new documentary, All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert , directed by Vivian Ducat.
Rembert sat down next to Robert Poonk Carter, his best childhood friend. Rembert, whose nickname was Pike, used to dance with Poonk in a troupe along with a tall friend whom they called Sister Boy. They reunited after 40 years through the making of the documentary. Carter flew up from Georgia Thursday to see his friend in his new role as a New York artist and storyteller last minute travel bargain uk extraordinaire.
In the documentary, Rembert leads the film crew back through the now-abandoned haunts of his youth, down Hamilton Avenue and to the Colored Folk Corner, where you catch up with your relatives on Sundays. He talked about Mary Douglas, who used to deliver babies for eight dollars, even though no one ever paid her in full.
Carter issued a few mmm-hmm s as Rembert told his life story. Rembert was given away as a 3-month-old baby to his great-aunt, Lillian, who would drag him with her on a sack while she toiled in the cotton fields.
Cotton picking is just like prison, Rembert said in the film. Sometimes, you d work all day on one row and never get to the end. He worked so much as a kid that he went to school only one or two days a week. In those days, he said, blacks had to go through separate entrances to bars and restaurants, and were routinely humiliated and beaten by whites.
It begins when Rembert decided to take part in the civil rights movement as a teenager. last minute travel bargain uk In 1965, at the age of 19, he headed to Americus, Georgia, join a protest. At that time, police handed out guns not only to law enforcement, but to white civilians. At some point, Rembert recalled, people started shooting at us.
As the protesters fled, Rembert, pursued down a side street by two white men with guns, hopped into a car with keys in it and fled. The law caught up with him and held him in jail in Cuthbert without any charges.
Rembert recalled being thrown in the trunk of a car by law enforcement. He was driven last minute travel bargain uk into the woods, hung by a noose from his feet, beaten from all sides, then stabbed in the genitals by the deputy sheriff from whom he d escaped.
The near-lynching continues last minute travel bargain uk to torture Rembert with recurring dreams and insomnia. He started work on an ambitious series about the episode that was supposed to span 15 panels, but he never got past the third panel because the subject was so painful, according to the film.
Rembert emerged a free man after seven years and married Patsy, a farm girl he had met on the chain gang. They moved north shortly after, last minute travel bargain uk in pursuit of a job as a longshoreman in Bridgeport. last minute travel bargain uk The family moved to New Haven in 1989 when the Bridgeport projects where they lived became too dangerous.
The film recounts how Rembert began to carve his stories into leather in 1996. His eight kids served as his marketing wing, sporting last minute travel bargain uk his art on medallions and jackets at New Haven schools. A few figures in the art world lent him key support, last minute travel bargain uk including Jock Reynolds at the Yale University Art Gallery, last minute travel bargain uk who gave him his first show in 2000.
After delving deep into hardship, the film ends on a triumphant note: Rembert, who left his hometown in chains, holds court at a reception in his honor in Albany, Georgia, and declares he has returned home as a somebody.
As the lights came up in the rec center, the Harlem quilters sought to prove him wrong. Several proclaimed they were overwhelmed by his work and his life. They gathered around for autographs, asked advice, and pleaded him to visit their classrooms and churches.
He s made me so proud to know he s gone this far, with all those barriers, said Janie Alston, 64, after Rembert signed her black-and-white flyer advertising the event. Think about it, she said He s but one, and there are many. And the story grows.
I was honored to be in his presence, said fellow quilter Judy Sawyers (center left in photo), a 64-year-old lifelong Harlemite. He does it on leather and we try to do it on quilting. last minute travel bargain uk Quilting played a key role in the Underground Railroad, she noted, when safe homes would hang coded quilts to indicate runaway slaves were welcome there.
One questioner asked how black people are supposed to afford his work when it sells for $25,000 a piece. Rembert replied he sells some smaller pieces for as little

As we returned to Lake Sebago, we passed by two eastern salamanders, which I find to be very hard to

Jon, Nachi and I drove to the Lake Sebago boat dock in Harriman. We were supposed to be joined there by another man, which would give us two cars with which we could do a shuttle hike beginning at the park s southwest corner and leading back to Lake Sebago.
Unfortunately, the other man was confused about where to meet us, and the absence of cell phone service meant that we were not able to get a message to each other. After waiting 45 minutes, the three of us  decided to do a loop hike from Lake Sebago, and we later learned that our missing friend had gone to the Visitor s Center, and ended up doing a solo hike from there.
10:54 a.m. : We began hiking south on the blue-blazed Seven Hills trail, which climbed 400 in the first 1/3 mile. At 0.6 miles into the hike we crossed los angeles county museum of science and industry Diamond Creek, at which point the Seven Hills trail joined an old woods road, shown on the map as Woodtown Road. After another 0.1 miles we turned right, departing from the woods road but remaining on the blue trail. This intersection is shown on the map as having a point of interest, los angeles county museum of science and industry Monitor Rock. I did not look too closely, but do not remember anything too exciting there.
11:19 a.m. : However, soon after we made the right turn off the woods road, we walked past this unnamed glacial erratic , the first of a number of large boulders deposited by glaciers that we would see on this hike:
12:08 p.m. : After 0.45 miles we hiked past a rather ugly concrete structure that Jon climbed los angeles county museum of science and industry onto; I have since seen it described in other blogs as a septic tank. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps was active in Harriman, constructing Pine Meadow los angeles county museum of science and industry Lake  and intending to construct cabins and campsites around it. This work included constructing a water system and presumably a wastewater system. In the end, few of the camps were built and none remain. los angeles county museum of science and industry I speculate that this abandoned los angeles county museum of science and industry structure relates to that CCC project.
1:40 p.m. : After 0.7 miles (and a lunch break), we reached the eastern end of the lake. The red trail continued toward the east, but we turned off it, and for just 0.1 mile followed the white-blazed Conklin s Crossing Trail, which led uncomfortably over a pile of large rocks:
1:45 p.m. : We then followed an unmaintained trail that hugged los angeles county museum of science and industry the southern shoreline of the lake for 0.6 mile. There were many of these concrete box structures around the lake, associated with the abandoned (waste)water system.
I guess there s no budget to remove these abandoned structures, which I generally felt were an eyesore. We also saw an immense amount of trash around the lake it is disgraceful that people come to visit a park and then leave it trashed!
The unmaintained trail ended at an old woods road, the Torne Valley Road. We followed this about 0.15 miles north toward the lake, where I hoped to find and visit the Conklin Cemetery. The map shows the cemetery about 0.1-0.2 miles from the woods road, and I followed unblazed footpaths in that direction.
After a few minutes, the rain subsided, and we were able to leave the shelter. It may have sprinkled once or twice after that, and the wet leaves los angeles county museum of science and industry continued dripping on us, but we managed without raingear.
We backtracked south the short distance on the Torne Valley los angeles county museum of science and industry Road, then continued another 0.2 miles until it intersected another los angeles county museum of science and industry old woods road, Pine Meadow Road West. We followed that around the west end of the lake for 0.4 miles, arriving back at where we had first encountered the lake. We crossed Pine Meadow Brook once again, turning left on the red-blazed trail that paralleled the brook.
We continued west on the red trail for another 1/4 mile, until it reached a bridge over the brook. At this point we stayed on the northern bank of the brook, following the white-blazed Kakiat Trail for 0.35 miles to the intersection with the orange-blazed Hillburn-Torne-Sebago Trail, onto which we turned right (northeast).
As we returned to Lake Sebago, we passed by two eastern salamanders, which I find to be very hard to photograph. They are also called red efts, though they look orange to me. A salamander begins as a tadpole, then as a juvenile is a land-based eft as seen here, then as an adult is back to being an aquatic creature.

As the Rockland County District Attorney s Office continues its effort to crack down on social servi

As the Rockland County District Attorney s Office continues its effort to crack down on social services abuse, DA Thomas P. Zugibe announced yesterday the filing of criminal charges against seven individuals on grand larceny, welfare continental midtown fraud and other charges.
The DA s Office is in the midst of an investigation aimed at the Waldron Terrace Housing Complex in Central Nyack and have hit pay dirt as the seven defendants who range in age from 26 to 55 are accused of stealing over $300,000 continental midtown in benefits, and for falsifying applications submitted to, the Village of Nyack Housing Authority and the Rockland County continental midtown Department of Social Services between 2002 and 2012, making it possible for each to fraudulently receive a variety of public assistance benefits.
continental midtown Benefits DA Zugibe claims the defendants attained through fraudulent means include federal and state housing subsidies, food stamps and Medicaid assistance. Zugibe said, “This crackdown is yet another step in our continuing campaign to stop fraud and abuse of our public assistance system in Rockland continental midtown County. These arrests underscore continental midtown our commitment to improve the quality of life for the residents of Nyack. Those who steal money intended continental midtown to help struggling individuals and families continental midtown will be marked for arrest, prosecution and prison sentences.”
Special Agent Cary Rubenstein, United States continental midtown Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of the Inspector General, said, “The success of today’s search warrants and arrests demonstrates the superior commitment level of the state and local law enforcement officers and special agents from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of the Inspector General. When individuals fraudulently misrepresent their income and/or continental midtown family composition to secure rental assistance from HUD, we participate in operations like the one today, to ensure these individuals, who at times can bring a criminal element into HUD Subsidized continental midtown Housing, are brought to justice. Every HUD subsidized household has the right to safe, decent and sanitary housing.”
Individuals who steal public benefits hurt not only the taxpayers but the people who really need the assistance, said Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef. Every dollar stolen is one less dollar available to help support an eligible household. I m pleased that the Rockland County Department of Social Services has diligently worked to uncover this charged fraud, and we thank District Attorney Zugibe for agreeing to move forward with the prosecution of these individuals.
This clearly illustrates the importance of our relationship with our community partners, whether they are other county agencies like the District Attorney s Office; or businesses; or residents, in identifying suspected welfare fraud, said Susan Sherwood, Commissioner of Social Services. It is crucial that we all take an active role in identifying fraud; and I encourage others to contact us if they know of or suspect fraudulent activities.
The Clarkstown Police Department and Rockland County Special continental midtown Investigations Unit have been working with the Village of Nyack Housing Authority, the Central Nyack Civic Association and local residents to reduce crime and other quality of life issues impacting the Waldron Terrace continental midtown Housing Complex in Central Nyack.
Through continental midtown information received from community members, investigators learned of individuals living in the housing complex illegally. An investigation found multiple instances of people fraudulently receiving housing and other public assistance benefits. In executing five court-authorized search warrants at addresses on High View Court and Pine Street in Nyack, it is alleged that detectives recovered evidence continental midtown of the defendants’ jobs, income, continental midtown living expenses and residency.
Also, allegedly recovered was evidence of unauthorized continental midtown persons co-habitating at the various locations. The total amount of the benefit theft from government agencies by the defendants was over $300,000.
The defendants are variously charged with grand larceny in the third degree, a class “D” felony, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, a class “E” felony and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a class “E” felony. A class “D” felony is punishable by 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison and a class “E” felony is punishable by up to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison. Arraignments of those named in the complaints are pending in the Town of Clarkstown Justice Court.

It's a brisk January afternoon in West Point, NY, but it's like a sauna inside Christl Arena. Despit

It’s a brisk January afternoon in West Point, NY, but it’s like a sauna inside Christl Arena. Despite it being a holiday weekend on campus, the building is packed shoulder to shoulder with more than 5,000 spectators standing quietly in front of their seats. The Black Knights of Army are assembled near the foul line at the far end of the court, facing the corner of the stands as their band delivers articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon the alma mater of the United States Military Academy. It’s only been a few minutes since the final buzzer sounded, closing the book on a tough 59-50 loss to their rivals from Annapolis. Yet here the Black Knights stand, at attention, alongside the Midshipmen of Navy, each honoring their Academy and their opponent. In a moment, the Army players in their home whites and their opponents in Navy blue and gold will walk together to the opposite end of the floor, where the band of the U.S. Naval Academy readies to play the alma mater of the victors.
If you look for it, you can see joy on the faces of the Midshipmen articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon and disappointment on the faces of the Black Knights, but for these few moments th ere are no overt displays of celebration or sorrow. Basketball emotions are on hold while the players from both academies pay respect to principles that are bigger than the events of the past few hours.
“If you win, they play your alma mater second,” says Brennan Wyatt, a junior guard at Navy and one of just three upperclassmen on the roster. “So it’s always a better time if you hear your alma mater second, but… you have to show them respect like they show us respect, win or lose. I mean, it really does go back to respect, and how both teams, I feel, respect each other a lot as people, and as basketball players.”
In a culture that’s often too preoccupied with the accomplishments of the individual to be bothered with the team concept, the Army-Navy basketball rivalry is a breath of fresh air. Among the cadets, the success of the team comes first. Where their futures will take them, it has to.
The stakes are high and the rivalry fierce, but showboating and trash talk are noticeably absent here. You won’t see a player disrespect his opponent for the sake of self-promotion articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon in an Army-Navy game. “We’re both Academy schools and we hold ourselves higher,” says Ella Ellis, a senior forward for Army and the ninth-leading scorer in program history. “There de finitely won’t be any taunting articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon in that game. It’s definitely a rivalry, but we also have to remember that after this is said and done, we’ll be brothers in arms.”
The days are long for these student athletes. “Very long,” according to Ellis, articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon who is in line for morning formation at 6:45 each morning, and doesn’t get to bed until 11:30 at night. An Information Technologies major, his class schedule features advanced articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon options like Constitutional Military Law, Cyber Security, and Integrative System Design. They are sophisticated courses at one of the nation’s most demanding institutions, and they are regularly supplemented with military training and basketball games and practices. It’s a challenging lifestyle for Ellis and his teammates, but the tough days at the Academy serve the vital purpose of instilling in them the necessary discipline to become leaders in the United States military.
With all the hard work, it’s easy for an outsider to lose track of the fact that being an athlete at West Point, demanding as it may be, is as much an opportunity as it is a responsibility. Army head coach Zach Spiker agr ees. “I think another misnomer is, ‘Man, it’s so hard here.’ No. You get to do this,” says Spiker. “We can recruit a lot of people. You get to come here. You get to be a part of this experience. articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon You get to do all these things. And when you graduate, you look back and say, ‘Look at all those things we went through. Look at all the things we did.’ A lot of positive, articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon some negative, but you go through those experiences and it makes you a leader worth following when you graduate. And that’s what our entire goal is.”
Ellis has branched into Air Defense Artillery, articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon a military division in which “officers lead, train, and employ Air Defense forces in support of military operations, primarily against enemy aircraft and missile attacks,” as the Academy explains it. Or, as Ellis puts it, “Missiles or aircraft that are flying over us that are not supposed to be there? We’re responsible for taking them down.” To the layperson articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon writing about a basketball game, it’s a dose of reality to hear him speak so matter-of-factly about duties of such great consequence. The student athletes on the basketball court at Christl Arena, most of whom aren’t legally able to rent a car yet, make up America’s next generation of officers. It’s no exaggeration to say that Ella Ellis, Brennan Wyatt, and their respective teammates will soon be responsible articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon for protecting articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon Americans’ freedoms and very way of life.
So while college coeds around the nation may drop their books at the thought of 17-hour days and the rigors of balancing academics, athletics, and military training, you’ll forgive articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon the Army and Navy players if they have a different idea of what constitutes pressure.
It takes only a brief conversation with any of the players to realize that they have a perspective on life that goes well beyond their years. They also have a grasp on their priorities that’s lost on most college students. You certainly don’t have to remind them that there are things in life more important than basketball – even Army-Na vy basketball – like leadership, family, and country.
The rivalry matters. It matters to the cadets and faculty in Annapolis articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon and West Point, and to alumni around the world. It matters here and now to these players, and it will matter to them in the future. “They’ll get asked about this,” says Brian Gunning, articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon Army’s Associate Athletic Director. “It’s a big deal, not only around here at West Point and both academies. It’s a big deal in the Army… I’ve heard people tell that story of, ‘Yeah, I got to my platoon and they found out I played sports. articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon First thing they asked me is, “You beat Navy?”’”
When the two teams met back on January 20, Navy emerged with a win thanks to a whole lot of hustle and some strong 3-point shooting. In a gritty, physical game that featured a combined 49 fouls, the Midshipmen came away with more loose balls and had the floor burns to prove it. Navy was relentless in their offense, screening with purpose to open up their shooters. Even when Black Knight defenders were able to fight through the screens, the Midshipmen knocked down contested shots. Navy, a 34% three-point shooting team on the year, made 11 of 23 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon guard Kevin Alter was a key contributor for Navy, shooting 4 for 5 from long range, and scoring 14 points off the bench. “He’s about 5-foot-8, about 150 pounds, but he’s got the heart of a giant,” says Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. “He hasn’t been a starter here, but gosh, every day he’s the first one in the gym, last one to leave. And he’s worked himself into a position where he’s playing a lot of good quality minutes now.” Alter’s level of commitment is indicative of the intense work ethic that’s on display any time Army and Navy meet on the court, but the depth of his character extends far beyond basketball.
“He’s a highly competitive person. He’s got great leadership skills. articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon And he will be a young guy that will be an outstanding officer in the United States Navy because he’s got the toughness. This is a young guy who welcomes adversity, fights through it… and he’s a very, very bright guy,” DeChellis says proudly.
“Down the road, when I go to sleep at night, I know if he’s out there with the fleet that this country is in very, very good hands.” For Alter, whose grandfather graduated from the Naval Academy and served in the Marine Corps, it’s hard to imagine a greater compliment.
No doubt, Saturday’s tilt will be another physical game with lots of hard-nosed screens articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon and floor burns. When the dust settles, Alter will once again stand with his Midshipmen articles against helicopter tours of grand canyon teammates alongside the Black Knights of Army while the band plays. It’s a big-picture moment: One that takes place on a basketball court but is much bigger than basketball, and proof positive that there’s nothing quite like Army-Navy.

In an order dated October 30, 2014, Alfieri ruled that Maher did, indeed, have standing under the la

A neighborly bath england and hotels dispute concerning whether a line of evergreens and foliage bath england and hotels at the corner of Sullivan Drive and Central Highway in Stony Point constitutes a public hazard will continue now that State Supreme Court Judge Victor Alfieri has ruled that the complaining party, Kevin Maher, bath england and hotels has standing to pursue the matter before the Zoning Board of Appeals. Maher lives across the street from the offending hedge, and also happens to be the Stony Point Town Engineer. In the same decision the judge also denied Stony Point’s motion to dismiss the Article 78 proceeding outright.
The legal proceedings started back in May 2013 when Stony Point Building and Zoning Inspector Bill Sheehan issued a notice of violation to Erich and Kimberly Von Hein, property owners, bath england and hotels that the trees were blocking the line of vision at the intersection. The Von Heins filed an appeal bath england and hotels with the ZBA, and ultimately Sheehan found that as long as the trees were properly trimmed and pruned, they posed no violation. In December of that year he issued a “rescind bath england and hotels letter” to that effect.
Consequently, Maher appealed the decision before the ZBA, resulting in that Board’s February 2014 resolution dismissing his appeal on the basis that he had no standing to bring his claims. Maher then brought an Article 78 proceeding before State Supreme Court to overturn the ZBA’s findings bath england and hotels and force it to hear his appeal.
In an order dated October 30, 2014, Alfieri ruled that Maher did, indeed, have standing under the law to pursue the matter, both as an “aggrieved party,” since he lives adjacent to the disputed foliage and the intersection, and as a “town official,” since he is employed as the Town Engineer. Accordingly, the judge has sent the matter back to the ZBA for further proceedings.
According to Town Supervisor Geoff Finn, however, the Town Board has decided to appeal the portion of the decision denying outright dismissal, further drawing out what is already considered by many to constitute a complete waste of taxpayers’ money. Finn reports that the town has already spent almost $10,000 in legal fees on this matter. Maher, Finn and the Von Heins have all come under criticism for allowing what in essence is a disagreement between neighbors to become an expensive governmental and public legal issue.
Maher insists that he is in the right, bath england and hotels that the trees comprise a sight line hazard, and that the law is being applied inequitably if the Von Heins are allowed to keep their hedge. The Von Heins, on the other hand, have previously alleged that Maher has actively sought reasons to antagonize their family ever since an argument bath england and hotels erupted in 2009, and the fight over the trees is just one more provocation. Maher responds that his neighbors have been harassing him for years, and that he will continue to look into why they appear to be shown “favoritism.”
Both Maher and Finn agree that it is unusual for a town employee to bring a legal action against a branch of town government while still employed and carrying out his duties. Maher admits that it makes doing his job somewhat uncomfortable, bath england and hotels and that he knows he might jeopardize bath england and hotels his position. Still, he states he will “not bow to bullying” and will continue to push for his position. He does have some concern that the Town Board’s recent bath england and hotels budget decision to “outsource” certain functions might adversely impact his job status. Finn notes that it is not easy to work with someone who is suing, but that so far Maher has continued to do his work competently.
In the meantime, the Town has six months to perfect its appeal of the Article 78 decision denying dismissal of the action, even though doing so will continue to run up a taxpayer funded bill for legal fees. Win or lose, both sides would have the option to pursue further appeals, potentially keeping the feud alive for years. The quickest way to resolve the dispute might be simply to allow the ZBA make its ruling on the danger of the trees, as Alfieri ordered. That, however, does not appear to be the direction that either side is choosing right now.
CLARIFICATION In the November 13 edition of the Rockland County Times, a recap of the Stony Point Town Board meeting stated that Town Engineer Kevin Maher had won an Article 78 hearing against the town pertaining bath england and hotels to shrubbery on Central Highway, which he claimed blocked drivers vision. As explained in the above article what the Supreme Court found was that Maher has standing to file the claim. The case was referred back to the Zoning Board of Appeals. The town has not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling that Maher has standing.
Kevin Maher doesn t bow to bullying?? Looks like he is the bully here. It s obvious he is using this issue to continue harassment of his neighbors, and will continue to waste time and taxpayer money to get his way Stony Point should bath england and hotels continue to fight this, just for the principal of the matter. What a sad, spiteful bath england and hotels man Kevin Maher is. It s an issue of public safety? Yeah, okay, that s believable!! If it bothers him so much, why doesn t he just move? As a RENTER, he can do that. I truly believe in karma.....it s always bath england and hotels comes full circle. What you put out there always comes back to you, one way or the other.
This is ridiculous... I want to know why this is the ONLY corner with shrubs in ALL of Stony Point that this man is going crazy about??? Cause I went around the other day and took pictures of 5 other spots that are blind spots due to shrubs... Oh wait that s right because he has a personal vendetta bath england and hotels against his neighbors... He has no worries about the money being used because he rents his house so he doesn t pay taxes!
never do i get involved in this but i and my family are long time historians of this town and thats been there atleast most of my life, so for this paper or matt in general bath england and hotels 2 pick on and or frown upon something thats not his or your property doesn t involve you or any1 else,
Pamela Villmann.... Eric and kim have earned the bullying! He parks his flat bed trucks where it blocks the view of oncoming traffic, speeds down Lewis Drive, where theres alot of little kids. They disrespect anybody and everybody bath england and hotels he can! Hang that asshole high!
The dispute started as neighbors and when the Engineer filed a complaint against our trees and we did what the town asked, that wasn t good enough for him. he didn t get his way. He wants our trees to be cut down to the ground. bath england and hotels He is going after the ZBA because it didn t go the way he planned. The town is directly involved because he made it that way. its ridiculous, i agree but it really isn t in our hands at the moment...

For such bountiful payoff, the hard labour comes with a 4am alarm call. But, having already checked

Author Helen Walsh set her latest novel, The Lemon Grove, in the glamorous north of Mallorca, but it’s the bucolic south of the island that keeps drawing her back, and is especially how do i find the cheapest airline fares lovely at this time of year with the crowds gone
It’s 11 am, and I’m sipping fresh orange juice outside Caf Sa Placa in S’Alqueria Blanca. The sun has just broken through on Mallorca’s south coast, burning off the last of a sluggish cloud. According to our waiter, Juan, autumn has been golden so far, and today is set to be another scorcher. how do i find the cheapest airline fares To my left, a group of Mallorcan pre-schoolers are playing tag in the square. how do i find the cheapest airline fares With the tourist traffic gone for the summer, their mothers are able to sit back and enjoy their coffees and Camels in peace. I have been coming to Mallorca for 12 years now, and the autumn is by far my favourite inflection. With the crowds thinning out and the pace slowing how do i find the cheapest airline fares down, a different, how do i find the cheapest airline fares Mallorca natural starts to re-emerge. And, with the accompanying dip in accommodation and travel prices, it’s the perfect weekend getaway. Our plan is to do two days and one night for under €500.
For such bountiful payoff, the hard labour comes with a 4am alarm call. But, having already checked how do i find the cheapest airline fares in online and carrying overnight bags only, our 6.10am flight from Liverpool gets to Palma at 9.45am local time. This is where the joys of off-season kick in: no queues for passport control, or anything else. We’re straight through. In the manic red months of summer, you can swelter for hours in never-ending car-hire queues – hardly the ideal start to a holiday. But in October, at 10am on a Friday, there are more staff than customers. By 10.30am we’re purring along the road to Santany , on the southern tip of the island. Still too early to check in, we flop out in S’Alqueria Blanca’s village square (more a triangle, in truth) nibbling pimientos de Padr n in the shadow of St Jose’s church.
The food is one of Mallorca’s real joys and we don’t want to fill up first thing, so a little rocket salad with shavings how do i find the cheapest airline fares of grimalt reserva cheese (made up the road in Llombards) and a spiky caf solo complete an idyllic brunch. We hit the road and head for the hotel. The wild Tramuntana region I evoke in my book The Lemon Grove lies on Mallorca’s how do i find the cheapest airline fares rugged north coast. With its mountainous jewels of Deia, Valldemossa and Soller, it is a spectacular, romantic – and pricey – region. The bucolic south with its windmills and haystacks and pine-fringed beaches is every bit as lovely and, at this time of year, its numerous hotels rurals can be had at a snip of their high-season rate.
The agrotourism revolution of the past two decades has seen remote farms and grand rural casas remodelled into small country hotels serving fine rustic food. Over the years we have come back to the same three properties time and again: how do i find the cheapest airline fares Es Turo in Ses Salines (doubles from €75 room-only), and Hotel Rural Sa Galera (doubles from €146 B B) and Son Terrassa (doubles from €165 B B, closed Dec-Feb), both on the outskirts of Cas Concos. Once we’d been back a couple of times, the hotel owners advised us to bypass the big internet discounters and email them directly for their best rates.
This time we’re staying at Son Terrassa, where most rooms are small casitas facing the hotel’s magnificently cultivated gardens. Its elevated position looking out over miles of flat farmland makes it a heavenly spot for a swim, a doze and a lazy hour or two with your book. The towns and villages of Mallorca’s south are dominated by their churches – huge, majestic monuments, visible from miles around. Even for the non-religious, sitting on the terrace from which the hotel takes its name, cold Estrella in hand, gazing out at the bastion of La Immaculada is a spiritual moment.
It would be quite easy to while the whole weekend away by the poolside, but we have plans. In a token nod to Mallorca’s love affair with the bici , I’ve pre-hired bicycles. The idea of biking through endless, winding, country how do i find the cheapest airline fares lanes has become such a fantasy of mine that it’s almost an obsession. Back home in Liverpool I can barely imagine a five-minute stretch without some angry driver rearing up behind, revving their engine. But in the lanes between Cas Concos and S’Alqueria Blanca, and onwards through the Mondrag parc natural how do i find the cheapest airline fares , we barely encounter a vehicle. Taking it slowly, passing goats and pigs and tractors ploughing their fields post-harvest, we ride a farmer’s route that can’t have changed in centuries. While the south’s arable pastures lack the staggering, heart-in-mouth drama of the north, there’s a tradition and a permanence about this corner. Deia, Valldemossa, and even the newly boutique Fornalutx are all chic northern European enclaves these days. But as we pedal past olive groves and crumbling loose-stone walls, a sea-breeze mingling with notes of pine and grass, we’re experiencing a slow-burn Mallorca – and the essence of relaxation.
S’Amarador has to be one of the most beautiful how do i find the cheapest airline fares beaches on the island. Enclosed by pines and ancient, crenellated rock, this is the quintessential “postcard” beach that tourists how do i find the cheapest airline fares can never find. At this time of year, with the best part of six months’ sunshine warming its turquoise shallows, the sea is lukewarm – almost how do i find the cheapest airline fares body temperature. We chain the bikes up at the picnic area and head across fine white sands to the rough diving platforms hewn into the cliff. There are few things to match the shocking liberation of that first plunge; it’s almost worth saving up your months of stress for such exquisite release.
From this side of the natural park, it’s a 20-minute swim around the headland how do i find the cheapest airline fares to the more popular Cala Mondrag . We do it breaststroke, speculating how do i find the cheapest airline fares as to whether this could ever lose its magic: if you dived and swam like this every day, would it still thrill you so? We haul ourselves out of the sea, heavy-legged, and dry off outside the beach bar under a mild, late sun. It must be 6pm by now, and we’ve already slowed right down – it feels like we’ve been here for days instead of hours. It would be easy to order a second carafe and watch the sun dip down into the ocean, but when the light falls here it falls fast and heavy. Bats begin to flit but, as quiet as it is now, it would be folly to negotiate those lanes in the dark.
The bike ride back is slightly uphill, slightly tipsy and we’re ravenous by Cas Concos. We stop off at La Oveja Negra , a bustling neighbourhood bar serving great affordable food. Across the road is Viena (vienamallorca.com), how do i find the cheapest airline fares a restaurant whose reputation makes booking essential, even at this time of year. We’re more than happy with hot dogs, chips and a crisp Mallorquin salad topped with fat, purple olives. how do i find the cheapest airline fares In spite of earnest promises of a moonlit swim, we get no further than sitting outside the casita with a brandy, staring up at the stars.
Saturday is market day in Santany and it’s worth getting there early for the best of the local farmers’ how do i find the cheapest airline fares produce. Cheese, honey, tapenade, sausage and lemon curd are all specialities worthy of their own aisles, while the panader a (bread) and churro (Spanish doughnut) stalls do a roaring trade, their aromatic waft drawing in customers from afar. I browse the leather goods, the secondhand books and the vinyl stalls before settling on a special edition of George Sand’s A Winter in Mallorca for a princely €6. We cool down with a frozen yoghurt and a look around the cathedral’s gilded frescos before chugging back to the hotel to check out.
Our flight back is not until midnight and we have designs on a picnic, another good swim and dinner in Palma before handing our car keys back. I’ll say without reservation that Pomodoro in Santanyi is the best little pizzeria in the south. Its thin, crispy, wood-oven pizzas are fast, delicious and cheap – just the ticket when your plan is to devour your napoletana , still warm, on the plateau of a hilltop castle 15 minutes after paying for it.
Santuario San Salvador, sitting at 509 metres above the small town of Felanitx, offers a dizzying panorama across the plains and rocks and out to sea. I sit on the steps, watching an eagle soar and, once again, feel that elemental tug that only Mallorca seems to elicit.
The major beauty spots and beaches of the south – Es Trenc, Mondrag , Cala Llombards – can get crowded at the weekend. With half an eye on showering and changing later on, we head instead for a little beach on the quiet west side of Portopetro. how do i find the cheapest airline fares A stumble from an unprepossessing car park down a rubble path leads to a beach bar with recliners and its own salt-water pool. Beyond it, there’s a sandy cove and a glorious gully of deep, pellucid green divers’ sea. We’re straight in, swimming out towards the fishing how do i find the cheapest airline fares boats until the blue-green depths begin to darken and chill. We slump at the pool bar, dunking warm, cinnamon-sprinkled churros into sticky hot chocolate. It’s time to shower and change.
Palma, how do i find the cheapest airline fares a miniature Barcelona with its bustle and hum, deserves a long weekend to itself. Its hotels, its nightlife, its fish market, the warren of chic streets and restaurants around how do i find the cheapest airline fares the cathedral, its elegant shopping colonnades and, yes, its beaches, are those of a sophisticated international city. But, with only four hours until our flight and a car to return, we forgo dinner and head for a familiar favourite, Le Voyeur in the souk-like La Llotja-Born district. This tiny jazz bar, with its bursting how do i find the cheapest airline fares leather chairs, bookshelves and retro gramophone, serves terrific, old-school (as in free) tapas. Later on, when the bands start to play, you can stand there with a glass of pale sherry and an anchovy tostada and let the night begin. For us though, it was nearly the end. Freshened and invigorated from our 36 hours in Mallorca, it was time to start planning our next hit.
Don’t miss: Palma fish market More an entire village on Palma’s seafront, harvesting and selling the day’s catch, the fish market has sheds and warehouses how do i find the cheapest airline fares displaying freshly landed bass, bream, lobster, sardines and more - and a choice of market
