My programme kicks off with a phenomenal two-hour treatment in what surely must be London's glossies
Bugger the dreams, let’s just get the sleep. How many times a week do you wake up feeling tired, however much kip you’ve had? If you’re like me, probably every day. Recent research shows that our modern lives are playing havoc with our circadian rhythms. Glowing blue lights cause in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and even cancer. Crikey. The Lancet is even calling for doctors to start prescribing sleep. ‘We’ve become arrogant glorietta bay inn san diego about it.’ Yes, we have. But if money can’t buy you love, can it buy you sleep? I’m going to the Corinthia Hotel London for their from computers, an obsession with social media, glorietta bay inn san diego our busy-busy-busyness glorietta bay inn san diego (doing what?) are denigrating one of the most important things not only for our health, but our sanity too. Our body clocks are screwed. The Today Programme brought it home to me. ‘Our bodies are under assault,’ says James Gallagher over the airwaves, with Dr Simon Archer , from the University of Surrey, piping up that lack of sleep can be an underlying ‘sumptuous sleep retreat’, devised by the Clinical Director of the Sleep School, Dr Guy Meadows , to see (or, hopefully, to sleep)
It’s obvious that hotels should be offering the best night’s sleep possible: after all they do have the most comfortable mattresses, divine bed linen and temperature-controlled and sound-proofed rooms. And travelling, especially from abroad, is tiring, so anything a hotel can do to help jettison the jetlag and leave people more relaxed than when they arrived should be their guiding principle.
My programme kicks off with a phenomenal two-hour treatment in what surely must be London’s glossiest, sleekest – and biggest, over four floors – spas. Ruta, my therapist, sends me into an almost comatose state with her hands drenched in delicious ESPA oil , which she says is so powerful it will help me sleep without waking even once. We shall see. Then comes a Balinese massage gently using hot stones all over my body, concentrating on Ayurvedic pressure points on the head, knees and ankles, whilst also unknotting my shoulders and lower back. Afterwards, I don’t have to rush back into the bright lights of the big city, but can maintain my blissful supine state in one of the very cool sleep pods – a darkened hideaway where you can lie in peace and privacy to sleep, dream, meditate, in a room where an open stove fire crackles away.
The fact that I can then go upstairs to my room and not leave again till morning (it’s only 6pm!) is so thrilling that I immediately put on my dressing glorietta bay inn san diego gown and eagerly await my special glorietta bay inn san diego in-room sleep supper, glorietta bay inn san diego concocted by head chef Garry Hollihead . Smoked salmon glorietta bay inn san diego – for the omega 3s and protein – to start, followed by a turkey burger. Turkey is tryptophan-rich, so when combined with a simple carbohydrate such as mashed potato, it produces feel-good serotonin, which is needed to make melatonin – our natural sleep aid.
Finally, I get to wallow in a salted bath – excited about my morning swim, sauna and steam (the jet pool itself is like having a top-class massage) before my healthy breakfast (bircher muesli, ginger tea and a fresh smoothie) arrives (at 9am, what joy!). However well I sleep, the Corinthia has done all it can.
