Brent and I had no plans for our long uni break. When we found out Rocco was free to take on a date we were stoked. We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show Rocco the NSW North coast, and also check out all the little places we have always wanted to go, but never been to. We were lucky enough to pick up Rocco on New Year's Eve. We drove up the coast and camped one of Brent's hotel charlotte relative's property with some family and friends. At midnight, there was even some surprise fireworks on the property across the river. The light show didn't stop there either with shooting stars launching across a dark sky at regular intervals.
The next day we had a sleep in and enjoyed a swim in the river. hotel charlotte We had fish and chips for lunch at the Jetty in Coffs Harbour. Moving North, we checked out Wooli and Minnie Water, before hotel charlotte setting up camp in Yuraygir National Park, which was right on the beach. We spent the afternoon/evening enjoying the incredible beach and exploring the rockpools. We even saw a python on the track to the beach that we managed to pass with plenty hotel charlotte of space between it and us.
We had a reasonably early start on day three as we were heading to Byron Bay. We called in at Broom's Head, and then headed to Angourie, famous for its legendary surf break. We had lunch overlooking the ocean at Yamba and kept heading north. When we got to Byron it was super busy and the traffic was gridlocked!! We drove up and saw the picturesque lighthouse, the most Easterly point in Australia. The markets were on and filled with heaps of interesting hotel charlotte products and people. Almost everywhere was booked out, so we stayed at a caravan park a little out of town. Later that night we headed into town and met up with a friend to check out the nightlife in Byron.
Day four, we headed south again, firstly to Mullumbimby which is lined with unique shops. We met up with a friend at Brunswick Head for fish and chips and spent the afternoon swimming in the river and beach and jumping off the bridge. We caught Burns Point Ferry across the river as we headed to Evan's Head to stay with my Aunt.
In the morning, we checked out the beautiful rivers and beaches at Evan's head and explored the rockpools at Chinaman's hotel charlotte beach. From here we headed southwest to Dorrigo, going via Grafton and Nymboida, and catching the ferry at Ulmarra (Brent loves car ferries). We stayed at a campground five minutes walk from Dangar Falls, backing onto beautiful mountains and farmland. We swam in the crystal clear (but cold) waters of the Falls and enjoyed the cooler weather in the mountains. hotel charlotte The pool below Dangar Falls allows you to swim right up to the falling water and even around behind it, an awesome experience.
After a nice sleep in and lazy morning we headed to the Dorrigo Rainforest hotel charlotte centre. We did a 7km rainforest loop taking in two breath-taking waterfalls, and seeing plenty of different trees and wildlife. It was also fascinating to read about the history of Dorrigo rainforest, community and National Park at the rainforest centre. We swam again at Dangar Falls before having a yummy dinner at Hotel Dorrigo.
On day seven it was time to start heading back toward Sydney. We left Dorrigo via Waterfall Way. It is a winding mountain road down the mountain through rain forest hotel charlotte and out on the fertile farmland, an amazing road. We tracked south down the Pacific highway all the way to Diamond Beach, we spent the night there in the very nice local caravan park. Right on the beach, hotel charlotte we had a sunset swim and walk before having an early night.
Day eight and we were getting sad that we would soon say goodbye to Rocco. We checked out beaches such as Redhead, Blackhead, Boomerang, Bluey's, Forster and Tuncurry having swims, walks, and exploring in between the driving. We decided to stay at Stockton at another beach side caravan park with great facilities and just a 1 minute walk from the Hunter River North wall. That night we caught the ferry over to Newcastle for dinner.
Driving the van gave us so much freedom, and allowed us to see so many places we have never been, and we will definitely return to our favourite places! The van was decked out with everything we needed and was great to drive. Waving to every other Jucy Van we saw was a fun highlight while driving from place to place. Thank you so much for the awesome road trip JUCY !!
