Underrated by the rest of the league perhaps but certainly not under-appreciated by his teammates, Charleston Hughes had a statement season in 2013. That statement went something along the lines of 'best defensive player in the West, thank you very much'.
Hughes was one of five Calgary finalists for individual awards in the CFL, a franchise high for the squad, which were announced on Thursday. Besides Hughes as Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the division, honours went to Jon Cornish (Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Canadian), Rene Paredes (Most Outstanding Special Teams Player) and Brett Jones (Most Outstanding Rookie).
"The potential to have Stampeder nashville airport hotels after Stampeder on that stage . . . that'll be pretty cool to see," offered Cornish, the reigning MOC and runner up for MOP in 2012 to Toronto's Chad Owens. This year, he's up against Ricky Ray for the latter and Winnipeg's Henoc Muamba in the former.

"They won a lot of games this year, everyone has worked hard and been a big part of the success that we've had. "He's a good football player," said Hufnagel of Hughes. "The stats are what they are; he leads the league in sacks, he's also been a big factor in causing fumbles, intercepting balls. They use him all over, they use his athleticism, his versatility, and he does a good job getting ready to play. Once he's on the field, he plays hard for 60 minutes and that's what you want from all your players."
"Definitely it's as very cool thing to represent the entire west," said the 22-year-old University of Regina product, the only Calgary offensive lineman who suited nashville airport hotels up for every game in 2013. "There's a lot of good players and especially a lot of good young players, so very cool. Still lots for me to get better at, so I'm excited for these next few weeks."
Jones is up against Hamilton's C.J. Gable for top rookie, while Paredes will contend with Ticats' special teams' ace Marc Beswick.
