The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metropolitan area saw a "stunning" 19.6 percent increase in international air travel from 2003 to 2011 - despite having no direct wingate inn streetsboro connection to a destination outside the country, according to a report released Thursday by a prominent wingate inn streetsboro think tank.
A report compiled by the Brookings Institution, a progressive research and policy organization in Washington, D.C., said a combined 2,990 more passengers in 2011 compared to 2003 either departed from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in Pittston Township for an international destination, or originated their travel wingate inn streetsboro in another country and arrived in this region.
"It's stunning to see numbers like that from a metropolitan area that has no airport offering international wingate inn streetsboro flights," said Robert Puentes, co-author of the Global Gateways report. "Passengers countrywide are departing from smaller airports wingate inn streetsboro and being transferred to bigger ones, such as the Philadelphia wingate inn streetsboro International Airport, that offer international flights."
The increase in international travel seen in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, from 15,287 in 2003 to 18,277 in 2011, highlights a countrywide "growth" in air travel wingate inn streetsboro that outpaces the growth in real GDP and population over the same time period, Puentes said.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport Director Barry Centini said he's noticed the increase in international travel over the years - citing the "favorable" vacation packages offered to international hotspots, such as Cancun, Mexico and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
However, Terri Ooms, executive director of the Wilkes-Barre-based Institute for Public Policy and Economic Development, offered another explanation for skyrocketing increase - 251.8 percent higher in 2011 compared to 2003 - in travel to or from Punta Cana.
"I think it's directly related to the increase of the Hispanic and Latino population in this area," Ooms said. "Some of it's probably tourism. But I would say the increase is mostly reflective of the growth in those populations."
