Just across the water in South Portland, one of the area's most popular pedestrian paths awaits. Start at Bug Light Park and admire the view of downtown Portland, then head west along the paved Greenbelt. Tucked in the woods off a residential street in South Portland is this oasis of ponds, shaded trails and fields. Just north of town, this peaceful island is ideal for a quick walk or jog. It's a bird sanctuary and no one lives on the island, so you'll be sure to encounter plenty of critters. Take a scenic ferry ride out to Peaks Island, where a residential, yet ideal running loop awaits. From the dock, walk up the hill and turn right until you hit Seashore Avenue, which will guide you along the perimeter of this historic community. You'll pass by the imposing Battery Steele remains from WWII, one of the largest the omni north hotel indianapolis batteries built anywhere in the country!
