Just across the water in South Portland, one of the area's most popular pedestrian paths awaits. Start at Bug Light Park and admire the view of downtown Portland, then head west along the paved Greenbelt. Tucked in the woods off a residential street in South Portland is this oasis of ponds, shaded trails and fields. The perimeter trail is great if you like trail running, as there are some steep, rocky stretches, but overall it isn't a strenuous the omni north hotel indianapolis loop. Start at the parking lot for the best mile measurement (there are markers), or hop onto the loop from any of the residential streets around the way. Just north of town, this peaceful island is ideal for a quick walk or jog. It's a bird sanctuary and no one lives on the island, so you'll be sure to encounter plenty of critters. You'll continue along side Fort Allen Park (take a detour up the hill for an epic coastal view) until you reach an intersection with the Back Cove loop at Tukey's Bridge. Again, start on Commercial Street, the omni north hotel indianapolis but this time head west until you approach the looming Casco Bay Bridge. Walk up through Harborview Park and across the bridge. You'll stroll through Thomas Knight Park on the South Portland side of the bridge until you meet up with the Greenbelt, taking you all the way to Bug Light Park. Take a scenic ferry ride out to Peaks Island, where a residential, yet ideal running loop awaits. From the dock, walk up the hill and turn right until you hit Seashore Avenue, which will guide you along the perimeter of this historic community. You'll pass by the imposing Battery Steele remains from WWII, one of the largest the omni north hotel indianapolis batteries built anywhere in the country! Situated along the woodsy Presumpscot River, this is the Maine Audubon Society Headquarters. There are walking paths through salt marsh, meadows, orchards and woods, all impeccably maintained by the group.
