We are closing our snowdrop search and our road trip in Edinburgh with its castle. We discovered the
Snowdrops are amazing flowers. They grow when no other can. These flowers are as strong as couch grass but they are such beautiful little things! I am always delighted to see them because they are announcing Spring!
Two weeks ago we discovered them blooming cheap car rental in spain all over Scotland! cheap car rental in spain What a spectacle Snowdrops are enchanting the countryside in every area of the country during February. If you never saw snowdrops before prepare yourself to be amazed, I will show them from every angle possible
cheap car rental in spain Our trip began by the visit of Stirling old town and its monuments from another time. We discovered our first snowdrop bushes hidden in the garden of the castle and in the cemetery during our night visit with the ghost tour. Enigmatic you could say, they may like history! I could almost feel Mary the Scots coming to admire them
Following our journey, we discovered snowdrops outside Doune castle located near Stirling on the road to the Loch Katherine. Even with the rainstorm we had, I could not resist to take pictures of them! I will tell you all about our rather funny experience of the Doune Castle in another travel post. Doune Castle was used in the movie the Holy Grail from the Monty Python in 1975. Although it wasn t yesterday, the movie is still very funny and movie magic is still happening in the castle. I will say no more!
On the road to Oban, we stopped to admire the Kilchurn Castle. No, I did not discover these cute little flowers near the castle, we would have needed a boat but I found them near the spot where we took pictures of it. The Kilchurn Castle is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland because of its location in the middle cheap car rental in spain of the Awe Loch and its dramatic scenery with Ben Cruachan in the background. Unfortunately, we were not able to visit this incredible place because it is opened only in summer cheap car rental in spain (from April to September) but the area was so soaked by water that the road to access it was certainly flooded.
Despite flooded roads and roadwork, we finally arrived to Oban on the Scottish West Coast. This quite little town is the hometown of the Oban whisky (in fact, it is the contrary, the town developed itself around the distillery :)) We admired the view from the bay to the islands (particularly Mull) and discovered an interesting castle (again, I know): Dunollie Castle. It is a nice walk from the harbour alongside the sea. Follow the coast and you will find a pedestrian path with a fantastic view on the castle and the sea. We couldn t go to the castle because cheap car rental in spain it is closed during the low season but we could admire the carpet of beautiful snowdrops at the castle feet (I never saw so many gathered in one place). It was beautiful!
We were following our journey cheap car rental in spain up North when we discovered new snowdrops in Plockton village near the Isle of Skye. On the Isle of Skye, we did not observe any snowdrop but it is very understandable when you see the vegetation of the place. The island is volcanic therefore the vegetation is dry. You will find nor forest nor grass which means no snowdrops there. To come back to Plockton and its snowdrops, if you are in the area, don t miss out this cut little village. cheap car rental in spain Of course, you need to visit the Eilean Donan Castle at least ones but Plockton is one of those hidden picturesque little fisherman villages. The small houses are really cute and the view from the waterfront (well, the street alongside the sea) is unbelievable (ask the sky to give you a little sunshine and the place is magic). Do you know there are palm trees in Plockton? The village must benefit from a microclimate! Something else you should not miss out in Plockton, the fabulous hot langoustines with garlic butter from the Plockton Inn So delicious!
Then our journey leaded us to the northern point we would go: the Glenmorangie Distillery cheap car rental in spain located near the village of Tain. This distillery is beautiful because the buildings are authentic and traditional but also because it is located right next to the sea. It gives a je ne sais quoi to the distillery but it is also very important for the whisky they produce! The salty note in the Glenmorangie is a nice signature. I discovered a cute little snowdrop bush right at the entrance cheap car rental in spain of the place. cheap car rental in spain I wanted to take a picture cheap car rental in spain of them with the distillery in the background but I couldn t do it so I improvised to give you the first picture of the triptych The Glenmorangie visit is do not miss activity. cheap car rental in spain We learned so much about the making process of their whiskies and the guide was so helpful (if you have Catherine as guide, you will certainly enjoy it)! We even tasted all their different whiskies (Sauverne cask, Port cask, Sherry cask I know they don t usually do it but you may be lucky ;)). The visit costs £5, a bargain.
A little south from Tain, we stopped in another picturesque village: Cromarty. This village is completely deserted in February but you can always count on the only pub to serve you a little something and the super cute cheesemonger as well (curiously opened on that day). The little white houses near the sea are full of charm however the view on the opposite side cannot be uglier with the huge fabric (apparently owned by a gas company).
We are closing our snowdrop search and our road trip in Edinburgh with its castle. cheap car rental in spain We discovered the little flowers in the Princess Street Garden hidden far from the street buzz at the castle feet. The castle is a must do in Edinburgh although I am still undecided on wether it is worse to pay £16 per person to visit it. The main interest cheap car rental in spain points are according to me, the Royal Jewellery cheap car rental in spain exhibition and the War prison where the exhibition is very very well done. Maybe I needed a guided tour of the place to convince me entirely. We will see next time.
Unfortunately, I could not present our entire journey through the snowdrops but I am quite happy to be able to show you my favourite cheap car rental in spain moments of the trip. Scotland has again given us the best of itself and we have still a lot to discover from it. Next time, I am hoping to travel to the west coast islands and the Shetland Islands in the North-East (snowdrops won t be joining cheap car rental in spain us but I would certainly find an equally interesting subject to tell you my stories)
If you visit more than one property managed by Historic Scotland in 5 days, I recommend you to buy the explorer pass for £23. The Stirling Castle and the Edinburgh Castle are together £30 together!
