The Grand Historic Venue began as a lodge built by the Freemasons in 1866 as their Maryland headquarters. President Andrew Johnson was present at the ground breaking ceremony of the historic occasion. During the Second World War, the building was converted to an air raid shelter.
After the Masons relocated in 1996, Tremont Suite Hotels purchased the property in 1998 and saved it from being destroyed and replaced with a parking garage. In 2005, following extensive restorative renovations that cost $27 million dollars, the building reopened as the Tremont Grand. When the hotel was renamed Embassy Suites Baltimore, the building was renamed Grand Historic Venue.
