Last night Luxury Travel Advisor got a chance to sample the latest addition to New York s rooftop bar scene at the new Archer Hotel : Spyglass, a Glen Coben-designed, 1950s-styled space overlooking Manhattan s garment district.
From the indoor/outdoor bar area we could look directly south over Manhattan to the Empire State building, lit up in purple and white that evening. The menu included a selection of small bites, including a delicious octopus taco (really!) as well as a more hors d oeuvrey take on bacon on a clothesline, a signature dish from the hotel s downstairs restaurant, David Burke fabrick.
Insider tip: if you re looking to escape the crowds, there s a secondary balcony around back of the bar, past the restrooms. The view isn t quite as nice (though you can still see the Empire State Building!) but we predict that many will pass this area by in their rush to the balcony in front of the bar, making for a potentially quiet retreat.
While we were there we also got a quick chance to pop down to the hotel s guestrooms. The rooms come in two configurations with a king bed or two double beds and four design palettes for added variety. The theme of variety continues in the turndown service an eight-item rotation includes locally-inspired items like Baked by Melissa Cupcakes and David Burke mini black and white cookies. The hotel s signature guestroom, Archer s Den, also has a tufted sectional sofa, walk-in shower and a collection of Archer s favorite books.
