But, generally speaking the one thing the smaller cars are not built for is when take a vacation and you have put five people, five suitcases, two laptops, two bags of munchies, five bottles of water, three pillows, two blankets into the car, it  is COMFORTABLE!
What we have done for the past fifteen years or so is we rent a car for one week to take our  vacation in a rental car , with unlimited mileage, that has no restrictions on taking the car out of state.
Today, you can rent a car from Dollar, Thrifty car rental and others for a week and get like a Toyota CAMERY Car or similar for approximately $200.00 for the week (use the insurance coverage you have on your personal car), or you can get a SUV like a Ford ESCAPE for approximately $400.00 for the week if you need a little more room to vacation in a rental car .
I started out renting a Lincoln Towncar, which is a luxury class; because when I went to get my rental car they did not have a FULL SIZE car, but provided me the LUXURY CLASS Lincoln at the same price. We found that for us the extra room over our Ford Focus class car it provide comfort to passengers, hawaiian airlines vintage handling of vehicle was worth the extra money in the following years for our family of four, plus sometimes our dog to vacation in a rental car.
The one IMPORTANT THING that you should do when possible is to physically go to the car rental location you are going to pick up your car and speak to the manager in regards to telling the manager; "Look, I am taking a week off for vacation and my family and I are renting a larger vehicle than we own to have comfort, etc.  I don't want to come down here on the day that I am suppose to pickup our car and find that the clerk tells me that the only thing you have is no better than what we own, do you understand what I am saying?
Just a side note; I leased our family car on three year leases. If I added on the 10,000 to 12,000 vacation miles, when I went to turn my lease car in the surcharge for lease overage mileage would be greater hawaiian airlines vintage that the entire cost of renting the Luxury cars for taking our vacation in a rental car
